Mustang Courts Unveil New Look for 2013-14 Season
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – During the summer and fall of
2013, Mustang Courts have been enhanced to become the premier
tennis facility in the Big West Conference. The seven court complex
received a $250,000 improvement that included resurfacing and
branding of the courts, new windscreens and a state-of-the-art
scoreboard that will allow fans to track scores on every court.
The official unveiling of the scoreboard will take place at 11 am on Saturday, Oct. 5 at the Mustang Courts. Expected to speak will be President Jeffrey Armstrong, Cal Poly Athletics Director Don Oberhelman, the Cal Poly tennis coaches and members of Tennis Connect SLO. The unveiling is open to the public.
“Thank you to the members of the San Luis Obispo tennis community who helped make this a reality,” said Oberhelman. “Over the summer we have gone from a below-average facility to one of the finest in California. We have a fantastic history of winning tennis championships at Cal Poly, and the renovation of the facility is not only going to enhance our competitiveness, but also provide our student-athletes with the type of experience they deserve.”
Tennis Connect SLO is headed by Bill Wesnousky and the major philanthropic gifts were secured from San Luis Obispo residents John and Tracy Ronca and David and Diana Salmon. Support for Tennis Connect SLO is primarily from the San Luis Obispo County community and the organization looks forward to partnering with Cal Poly Athletics on future enhancements of the tennis programs.
"We are extremely excited about the upgrades to our tennis facility,” said head women’s tennis coach Damon Coupe. “Through the generosity of our supporters, Tennis Connect SLO and the Ronca Family, we have been able to upgrade our courts, windscreens, and add a new scoreboard. This puts us at the top of the facilities in the Big West Conference."
“The new additions to the facility will drastically help recruiting and player development,” added head men’s tennis coach Nick Carless. “I want to thank Tennis Connect SLO, the Ronca Family and all who have supported Cal Poly Tennis. Our facility is now the best in the Big West Conference and will benefit student-athletes for years to come.”
