(4/2/07) SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly has its first Big West Conference player of the week in baseball for the 2007 season.
Grant Desme was honored Monday for his performance in Cal Poly’s three-game series sweep at Pacific over the weekend.
Desme (6-2, 210, Junior, Bakersfield, CA), Cal Poly’s right fielder, went 10-for-16 (.625) and hit for the cycle in the series with five singles, two doubles, a triple and two home runs. He drove in seven runs and scored seven times.
Desme raised his season batting average to .393 with his performance and now has 11 home runs and 41 RBIs, best in the Big West in both categories. He is on pace to break Cal Poly's single-season home run and RBI records.
Desme had three hits and a walk in each of the first two games of the series and four hits in the finale.
The Mustangs hit .411 in the series with 40 runs scored on 53 hits en route to 13-8, 13-9 and 14-6 victories.
Earning Big West Pitcher of the Week honors was UC Riverside right-hander James Simmons, who pitched a complete-game three-hitter with five strikeouts in a 4-1 win at UC Davis on Friday.
Cal Poly, 16-16 overall and 3-0 in conference games, hosts Cal State Northridge for a three-game Big West series this weekend in Baggett Stadium. Games on Thursday and Friday start at 6 p.m., followed by the 1 p.m. finale Saturday. The series starts a day earlier than usual due to Easter Sunday.
