SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly will induct two wrestlers, a former administrator and a major benefactor into its Athletics Hall of Fame this fall.
The 2009 class -- Chuck Liddell, John Woods, Evelyn Pellaton and Alex G. Spanos -- will raise the total number of inductees to 101 individuals, a track and field relay foursome and the 1960 football team.
The quartet will be inducted at a dinner to be held Friday night, Sept. 11, at Embassy Suites in San Luis Obispo, and will be introduced at halftime of Cal Poly's Hall of Fame football game against Sacramento State on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 4:05 p.m. in Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
Dr. Gil Stork, a current Hall of Fame inductee and member of the 1960 football team, will serve as Master of Ceremonies.
Tickets for the induction dinner are $70 per person and reservations can be made by contacting the Athletics Special Events Office at (805) 756-0277.
The 2009 Hall of Fame inductees (in alphabetical order):
Chuck Liddell -- Known as "The Iceman," Liddell is an American mixed martial artist (MMA) who fights for the Ultimate Fighting Championship and has a 21-7 record. A former UFC light heavyweight champion, Liddell has an extensive background in kickboxing and collegiate wrestling. Along with fellow UFC fighter, Randy Couture, Liddell is widely credited for bringing mixed martial arts into the mainstream of American sports and entertainment. Liddell was a four year starter on the football team at San Marcos High School, then wrestled at Cal Poly from 1988-93 and graduated with a bachelor's degree in business/accounting in 1995.
Liddell made his UFC debut in 1998 with a decision victory over Noe Hernandez. On April 16, 2005 at UFC 52, Liddell earned a first-round knockout against Couture, making him the new UFC light heavyweight champion, a title he would successfully defend five times over two years.
Liddell, 39, has written a book, "Iceman: My Fighting Life," which spent multiple weeks on the New York Times' best seller list, and was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame on July 10 in Las Vegas.
Evelyn Pellaton -- Pellaton was Cal Poly's director of athletics for women during the formative years of the women's athletics program in the mid-1970s. When the men's and women's athletics programs merged in the early 1980s, Pellaton became an associate athletics director. "She should be recognized for her selfless efforts and personal donation to the athletics department. She was instrumental in guiding women's athletics at Cal Poly into what it has become today," said then-director of athletics Dick Heaton. "The late 1970s and early 1980s were difficult times and was a new beginning for women's athletics."
Pellaton was a physical education professor at Cal Poly from 1966-82. She was a gymnastics coach for three years and track and field coach for nine seasons. She also served as acting head of the women’s physical education department and was a student advisor.
Pellaton is a 1950 graduate of San Francisco State with a bachelor’s degree in physical education and earned her master’s degree in 1953 at San Francisco State and a doctor of education degree in physical education curriculum in 1975 at Laurence University of California. She played basketball, field hockey and softball while attending San Francisco State and was a player on several softball teams which won state and national championships in the 1940s.
Among her many other accomplishments, Pellaton was director of the Cal Poly Physical Education Workshop in 1967, was named Citizen of the Year by the Cayucos Chamber of Commerce, served in the United States Naval Reserve as a chief personnelman from 1960-81 and was a drummer in numerous bands.
She was inducted into the San Francisco State Physical Education and Athletic Hall of Fame in 1984.
Alex G. Spanos -- Spanos founded A. G. Spanos Companies in 1960 and has owned the San Diego Chargers since 1982. In addition to attending all Charger games during the National Football League season, Spanos also has played golf with best friend Bob Hope on some of the most prestigious courses around the world and was invited to represent the United States in the 1960 British Amateur Championship.Spanos was an aerospace engineering major at Cal Poly, attending the university in 1941 and 1942. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps, serving until the war ended in 1945. While a Cal Poly student, he participated in men's swimming and diving and was the drum major for the Mustang Marching Band.
Following his military service, Spanos earned varsity letters in both swimming and diving at College of the Pacific in 1946.
Throughout his life, Spanos has been a benefactor to countless sports activities -- from little leagues to high school and college athletic programs to major community sports events -- as well as sharing his good fortune by donating millions to benefit charities, educational institutions, hospitals, churches and civic organizations.
His extraordinary donation to renovate Mustang Stadium -- now named Alex G. Spanos Stadium -- is one of the most significant gifts in the history of Cal Poly Athletics. The Alex and Faye Spanos Theatre (formerly the Cal Poly Theater) is named in honor of Spanos as well.
Spanos is a 1974 Cal Poly Distinguished Alumnus and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree during 2004 Spring Commencement, bestowed by the CSU Board of Trustees in recognition of his lifetime service, leadership and philanthropy.
The A. G. Spanos California Tour, recognized as one of the top four developmental golf tours in the country, ran from 2004-06 and Spanos opened his golf course in Stockton, The Reserve at Spanos Park, in 1999. He has hosted the A. G. Spanos Celebrity Pro-Am since 2002.

As a senior he captured the NCAA Division II title at 167 pounds and went on to finish second at the NCAA Division I National Championships. He was a Division II national runner-up in 1968, thus earning three NCAA All-America honors. He guided Orange Glen to a 45-9-2 record in two years, a pair of league titles and a CIF-San Diego Section runner-up finish.
