SAN JOSE, Calif. – Junior shortstop Kyle Smith’s safety squeeze bunt in the ninth inning lifted No. 15 Cal Poly to a 3-2 victory over No. 25 San Jose State in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday night in Municipal Stadium.
 
Junior third baseman Adam Buschini opened the ninth with a double to left-center field and took third on a sacrifice bunt by junior catcher Ross Brayton. With a 2-2 count, Smith bunted up the third base line to score Buschini.
 
Senior right-hander Eric Massingham retired the side in the bottom of the ninth to end the game. Massingham (2-0) allowed one hit in two scoreless innings for the win, striking out one.
 
With the win, the Mustangs snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 9-3 on the year. San Jose State, which won its first nine games of the season before falling to San Francisco 4-2 on Tuesday night, slipped to 9-2.
 
Cal Poly scored twice in the second inning for a 2-0 lead. Junior outfielder Luke Yoder was hit by a pitch with one out, and another out later, Buschini belted his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to left.
 
San Jose State answered with single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to tie the game at 2-2.
 
The Spartans scored an unearned run on a two-out throwing error in the sixth inning and knotted the score on three singles – Corey Valine’s single knocking in the run.
 
Freshman southpaw Kyle Anderson pitched three scoreless innings in his first collegiate start for Cal Poly. Junior right-hander Mark DeVincenzi tossed 3 2/3 innings in relief, allowing two runs and three hits, and junior right-hander Kevin Castner secured the final out of the seventh inning, but not before giving up two hits.
 
The loss went to San Jose State closer Anthony Vega (0-1). He entered the game in the eighth inning with five saves in five opportunities, but gave up a run and four hits in two innings with one strikeout.
 
San Jose State used six pitchers in the midweek game.
 
The Spartans outhit Cal Poly 10-7, but stranded 14 runners on the basepaths. Designated hitter Josh Silver singled three times and shortstop Kyle Bellows and Valine each singled twice.
 
Buschini and junior right fielder Adam Melker each collected two hits for Cal Poly.
 
Cal Poly wraps up its eight-game road trip with a three-game non-conference series against California (8-5) in Berkeley. Friday’s game begins at 2 p.m., followed by 1 o’clock contests Saturday and Sunday.
