BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Junior right-hander DJ Mauldin allowed one unearned run and six hits over eight innings and freshman second baseman Matt Jensen drove in three runs with a pair of hits as No. 16/21 Cal Poly stretched its winning streak to five games with a 10-2 victory over Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday at Hardt Park.

With their third win over the Roadrunners (4-13) in as many days, coach Larry Lee’s Mustangs (14-4) clinched the four-game non-conference baseball series with one more game to be played Monday afternoon in Bakersfield.

Lee earned his 200th career win at Cal Poly with Sunday's victory, elevating his record in six-plus seasons to 200-158-2.
Mauldin (3-1) struck out six and did not walk a batter for the win. Mauldin has walked just four batters in 36 2/3 innings this season. Junior right-hander Mark DeVincenzi pitched the ninth inning, allowing one run and three hits.

The loss went to Cal State Bakersfield freshman southpaw Jonathan Montoya (2-1), who allowed five runs and six hits in seven innings with six walks and seven strikeouts.

Jensen has reached base 12 times in 13 plate appearances in the series so far with six hits and six walks. On Sunday, he singled to drive in a run in the seventh and doubled down the third-base line to knock in two more runs in the eighth.

For the series, Jensen is 6-for-7 (.857) with two doubles and five RBIs.

Senior center fielder Ryan Lee was 3-for-5 Sunday with a double and two RBIs while sophomore third baseman J.J. Thompson contributed a single and double.

Junior catcher Ross Brayton belted his first collegiate home run, a three-run shot to straightaway center field in the ninth inning.

Cal State Bakersfield’s nine hits included a single and double by first baseman Derek Geisinger.

The game, played in cold and windy conditions, was scoreless through the first four innings before Cal Poly put together the first of three three-run rallies in the fifth.

Lee singled home the first run, sophomore designated hitter D.J. Gentile doubled to knock in the second run and a dropped throw led to the third run.

Jensen’s single in the seventh gave the Mustangs a 4-1 lead and Cal Poly broke the game open with three runs in both the eighth and ninth frames.

In the eighth, Lee doubled home a run and Jensen’s two-run double made it 7-1. Brayton’s blast in the ninth extended Cal Poly’s lead to 10-1.

Cal State Bakersfield scored single runs in the sixth and ninth frames. A wild pitch allowed the first run to cross the plate and designated hitter Richard Escalera singled to knock in the ninth-inning tally.

Final game of the series will be played Monday at 2 p.m. with freshman right-hander Jeff Johnson (0-1, 7.27 ERA) to start on the mound for Cal Poly. Cal State Bakersfield’s starting pitcher was not announced.
