SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Each of Cal Poly’s nine starters collected at least one hit, led by first baseman Adam Buschini’s four hits and three RBIs, as the No. 12/19 Mustangs defeated Dartmouth 14-9 in a non-conference baseball game Wednesday night in Baggett Stadium.

Center fielder Ryan Lee and catcher Wes Dorrell each added three hits and designated hitter D.J. Gentile drove in four runs with a pair of hits as Cal Poly extended its winning streak to eight games, the second time the Mustangs have won eight in a row this season.

Cal Poly will carry a 17-4 overall mark, its best 21-game start since the 1997 squad went 18-3, into its Big West Conference opener Friday night at No. 13/10 UC Irvine (13-7).

Dartmouth completed its eight-game West Coast trip having won one of seven and is 1-9 on the season.

Sophomore right-hander Buster Mueller (1-1), the second of three Mustang pitchers used in the game, allowed four runs and seven hits in 2 2/3 innings for the victory. Junior right-hander Mark DeVincenzi tossed two scoreless frames but missed a save by one run.

The loss went to Dartmouth starter Colin Britton (0-2), who surrendered nine runs and 11 hits in 3 2/3 innings.

Cal Poly has scored 49 runs on 52 hits in its last three games combined.

Only home run of Wednesday’s game was a leadoff blast by Gentile in the third inning, snapping a 2-2 tie. Cal Poly opened up a 9-2 advantage before Dartmouth made it close with a three-run sixth-inning rally highlighted by shortstop Joe Sclafani’s three-run double.

But the Mustangs continued to score with two runs in the fifth and single runs in each of their final three at-bats. Cal Poly scored at least one run in each of its eight at-bats Wednesday.

Among Buschini’s four hits was a double. It was his second four-hit game of the season and third of his Mustang career. In addition to Gentile, right fielder Bobby Crocker, left fielder Luke Yoder and third baseman J.J. Thompson also had two hits.

Dartmouth’s 19-hit attack of its own was paced by designated hitter Ray Allen with three singles. Sclafani finished with two hits and four RBIs for the Big Green.

The Mustangs and Anteaters will play Friday night at 6 and Saturday and Sunday at 1 o’clock in Anteater Ballpark. UC Irvine split two games with Washington earlier this week, winning 17-13 on Tuesday and falling 13-12 on Wednesday.
