STOCKTON, Calif. – No. 16/21 Cal Poly exploded for seven runs in the eighth inning to break open the game and went on to beat Pacific 13-8 in the finale of a three-game Big West Conference baseball series Saturday afternoon at Klein Family Field.

In winning its seventh series in eight tries this season, two games to one, the Mustangs improved to 24-8 overall and 5-4 in the Big West. Pacific fell to 12-18 and 5-4.

Cal Poly led 6-1 after scoring twice in the second, third and fourth frames, but Pacific battled back to within a run at 6-5 with a four-run fifth-inning rally.

Senior southpaw Jared Eskew (5-1) relieved starter Matt Leonard in the fifth and shut the door on the Tigers for three innings, allowing one run and three hits with one walk and a pair of strikeouts. Senior right-hander Eric Massingham secured the final four outs.

In 4 2/3 innings, Leonard allowed five runs and four hits with four walks and no strikeouts.

The loss went to Pacific starter Hunter Carnevale (2-4) after he surrendered six runs and 10 hits in 3 1/3 innings with no walks and two strikeouts.

Cal Poly reached double figures in hits for the seventh time in their last eight games, pounding out 17 hits off five Pacific pitchers.

Sophomore designated hitter D.J. Gentile, junior left fielder Luke Yoder and junior shortstop Kyle Smith each produced three hits for Cal Poly.

One of Yoder’s hits was a three-run home run on a 3-0 pitch that capped Cal Poly’s seven-run eighth-inning rally. Junior first baseman Wes Dorrell added a two-run single in the uprising and also had a sacrifice fly earlier in the game for a total of three RBIs.

Freshman second baseman Matt Jensen hit a solo home run and a double. He had five hits in the series, all for extra bases – three doubles and a pair of home runs.

Senior center fielder Ryan Lee and sophomore third baseman J.J. Thompson each had two hits – a single and a double and one RBI for each player.

Four Mustangs extended long hitting streaks.

Lee has hit safely in 22 straight games after his fourth-inning double while Jensen has hit in 19 consecutive games after his first-inning double. He also was hit by a pitch twice and intentionally walked.

Gentile extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a second-inning single while junior catcher Ross Brayton now has a nine-game hitting streak after his eighth-inning single.

Pacific’s 10-hit attack was paced by third baseman Mike Walker, catcher Kurt Wideman and center fielder Joey Centanni, each with two hits.

The Mustangs won Thursday's series opener, 12-7, and Pacific scored three times in the bottom of the ninth inning to take Friday's contest, 5-4.

Cal Poly plays a single non-conference game Tuesday night at Santa Clara before returning home to host UC Davis for a three-game Big West Conference series Friday through Sunday in Baggett Stadium.
