SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Senior center fielder Ryan Lee tied a Cal Poly Division I record while sophomore designated hitter D.J. Gentile broke another as the No. 15/18 Mustangs defeated UC Davis 8-4 in the second game of a three-game Big West Conference baseball series Saturday night before 1,712 in Baggett Stadium.

Lee extended his hitting streak to 25 games, tying the mark set by Brandon Roberts in 2004, and Gentile notched three sacrifice flies to break the Mustang mark as Cal Poly won its 16th straight game at home and improved to 26-9 for the season and 7-4 in Big West games.

UC Davis fell to 6-27 and 1-7.

Cal Poly, which beat the Aggies 11-10 in 10 innings Friday night, clinched its eighth series win in nine tries with Saturday’s triumph. The Mustangs have already won two more games than they did all of last year.

Cal Poly overcame an early 2-1 deficit with a pair of runs in the third inning and broke the game open with a four-run fourth-inning rally.

Sophomore southpaw Matt Leonard (4-1) allowed four hits, all in the first two innings, and three runs in seven innings of work on the mound with three walks and three strikeouts. Senior southpaw Jared Eskew tossed the final two innings in relief, allowing one run and four hits.

The loss went to UC Davis starter Scott Chew (1-4), another southpaw, who surrendered seven runs, only three of which were earned, and 10 hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Lee wasted no time tying the school mark as he singled to right-center field in the first inning. He went on to add two more singles in a 3-for-5 performance at the plate, leading Cal Poly’s 11-hit offensive attack.

Freshman second baseman Matt Jensen singled to drive in a run in the fourth inning and extended his hitting streak to 22 games while freshman right fielder Bobby Crocker and junior catcher Ross Brayton each had two hits for Cal Poly.

Gentile flied out to right field in his first two plate appearances and lined out to center field in the sixth inning, driving in a run each time for a school Division I mark. Eight Mustangs had garnered a pair of sacrifice flies in a game since Cal Poly elevated its program to Division I 15 years ago.

UC Davis collected eight hits, one each by eight different players. Shortstop Scott Heylman had a double for the Aggies.

Cal Poly scored in the first inning as Lee led off with a single and eventually came home on Gentile’s first sacrifice fly.

After UC Davis countered with two runs in the top of the second inning on Heylman’s two-run double to left, the Mustangs regained the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the third. Gentile’s second sacrifice fly tied the game at 2-2 and junior first baseman Adam Buschini singled to left field to break the deadlock.

Cal Poly stretched its lead to 7-2 with four runs in the fourth. Crocker singled to left with the bases loaded for the first run, a passed ball made it 5-2, Jensen’s RBI single to left gave Cal Poly a 6-2 cushion and another passed ball accounted for the final run of the inning.

The Mustangs added their final run in the sixth frame on Gentile’s third sacrifice fly of the game.

UC Davis scored single runs in the fifth and eighth frames on infield groundouts.

With the win, Cal Poly remains tied for second place in the Big West with Pacific, both with 7-4 conference marks and three games behind front-runner UC Irvine (10-1).

Final game of the Big West series will be played Sunday afternoon at 1, with Cal Poly freshman right-hander Mason Radeke (2-1, 5.20 ERA) to face UC Davis senior right-hander Jeremy McChesney (1-4, 9.20 ERA).
