SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Junior left fielder Luke Yoder’s fourth hit of the game, a three-run home run with two outs in the 11th inning, lifted No. 13 Cal Poly to a 12-9 victory over San Francisco and a split of their non-conference baseball doubleheader Saturday in Baggett Stadium,
Cal Poly, which trailed 8-5 and 9-8, scored in the ninth on Yoder’s two-out single to left field, sending the game into extra innings.
San Francisco right-hander Matt Hiserman retired the first two Mustangs in the 11th before giving up a double to senior center fielder Ryan Lee. Hiserman then hit freshman right fielder Bobby Crocker with a pitch and Yoder belted an 0-1 pitch over the wall in center field as Cal Poly won its fifth extra-inning game in as many tries this season.
Cal Poly, which dropped the first game of the twinbill 8-5, is now 31-12 for the season. San Francisco sports a 23-24 mark.
San Francisco used seven pitchers in the nightcap. Hiserman (3-5), scheduled to start Sunday’s game, worked 2 2/3 innings and suffered the loss, allowing four runs and four hits with one walk and three strikeouts. Hiserman picked up the save in the first game, his second of the year, pitching one scoreless inning with a hit and two strikeouts.
The win in the second game went to Mustang senior right-hander Eric Massingham (6-1), who pitched three scoreless innings with two hits and three strikeouts.
Yoder went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and five RBIs while sophomore designated hitter D.J. Gentile was 4-for-6 with one run scored and one RBI as Cal Poly outhit the Dons 18-16. Junior first baseman Adam Buschini added three hits, including an RBI triple and a run-scoring double.
Sophomore third baseman J.J. Thompson hit his fifth home run of the year, a solo shot off the top of the wall in left field that extended his hitting streak to 14 games. He also had a sacrifice fly.
San Francisco’s Stephen Yarrow, Drew Johnson and Nik Balog each had three hits.
In the opener, sophomore southpaw Matt Lujan scattered 10 hits over seven innings and San Francisco scored three times in the first inning and never looked back en route to the 8-5 victory.
The loss snapped an 18-game home winning streak for the Mustangs, the longest current streak in NCAA Division I.
Lujan (4-6) struck out six and walked one. After Jonathan Abramson pitched the eighth inning, Hiserman earned the save with a scoreless ninth.
Center fielder Bobby Ethel went 3-for-3 with one RBI to lead the Dons offensively.
Buschini produced his fourth career four-hit game for Cal Poly with a double and a two-run home run. Junior shortstop Kyle Smith also hit a two-run home run for the Mustangs. For both, it was their fifth round-tripper of the season.
Smith had three hits and Lee singled twice as Cal Poly outhit San Francisco 13-11 but stranded 10 runners on the basepaths.
The loss went to Mustang starter DJ Mauldin (4-3), who allowed seven runs and nine hits in 6 1/3 innings.
Cal Poly also lost the services of freshman second baseman Matt Jensen for at least six weeks as he fractured his clavicle (collar bone) in a collision with San Francisco's Travis Higgs while trying to field a grounder in the fifth inning of the nightcap.
Final game of the series will be played Sunday at 1 p.m. with freshman right-hander Mason Radeke (4-1, 5.98 ERA) to start on the mound for Cal Poly. The Mustangs have won nine of 10 weekend series this season.
