LONG BEACH, Calif. – Freshman right-hander Mason Radeke scattered nine hits over eight innings and Ryan Lee and Luke Yoder each banged out three hits as No. 18/22 Cal Poly defeated Long Beach State 9-3 in a Big West Conference baseball game Sunday afternoon at Blair Field.
With the victory, the Mustangs win a series at Long Beach State for the first time since 1997 and improve to 35-17 on the season and 13-8 in Big West games for third place. The 49ers fall to 25-26 and 11-10.
Cal Poly, which has won 11 of 13 series this season, scored single runs in the second and third innings and broke the game open with a six-run four-inning uprising.
Lee, Adam Melker and Adam Buschini all hit doubles to drive in runs. J.J. Thompson’s squeeze bunt accounted for another run, Ross Brayton hit a sacrifice fly for an RBI and Wes Dorrell singled up the middle for the final run of the inning.
Radeke (6-1) gave up single runs in the second, fifth and eighth innings. He retired nine consecutive batters midway through the game, retired the side in order three times and allowed just one walk and struck out three, all looking.
Senior right-hander Eric Massingham tossed a scoreless ninth inning.
The loss went to Andrew Gagnon (3-6), another freshman right-hander, who allowed seven hits and seven runs, all earned, in 3 2/3 innings with one walk and one strikeout.
Lee and Yoder each had three of Cal Poly’s 13 hits. Lee had a double and two singles while Yoder contributed a single, double and triple. Melker and Buschini each had a pair of hits – Buschini extending his hitting streak to 11 games.
Second baseman Derek Legg, third baseman Kirk Singer and right fielder TJ Mittelstaedt each had two of Long Beach State’s 10 hits.
Cal Poly wraps up the 2009 regular season with four home games next week, beginning with a single non-conference contest against Santa Clara on Monday night at 6.
The Mustangs also will host UC Riverside for a three-game Big West Conference series Friday through Sunday in Baggett Stadium.
