SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Junior second baseman Adam Buschini singled, doubled and homered while senior southpaw Jared Eskew picked up his sixth win as No. 19/25 Cal Poly opened a four-game homestand Monday night with a 5-4 victory over Santa Clara in a non-conference baseball game at Baggett Stadium.

Buschini’s home run, his eighth of the year, gave Cal Poly a 4-2 advantage in the fifth inning and Eskew and two relievers made the lead stand up as the Mustangs avenged an 8-5 loss to the Broncos on April 14 at Stephen Schott Stadium.

With the win, Cal Poly improved to 36-17 for the season while Santa Clara completed its 2009 campaign at 19-34.

With his three hits, Buschini is now hitting .416 on the season. He has 40 hits in his last 87 at-bats (.460) over a 22-game stretch.

Freshman right fielder Bobby Crocker added two hits, including a solo home run in the sixth inning for a 5-3 Mustang cushion. For Crocker, it was his fourth homer of the season.

Sophomore third baseman J.J. Thompson also had two hits.

Santa Clara outhit Cal Poly 10-9, paced by right fielder Kevin Madden with two doubles and a single, but was hurt by five errors. Two of Cal Poly’s five runs were unearned.

Eskew (6-2) allowed four runs and eight hits in six-plus innings with no walks and a pair of strikeouts. Junior right-hander Mark DeVincenzi relieved Eskew with a runner at second base and nobody out in the seventh, Cal Poly leading by a run.

A sacrifice bunt moved the runner, Madden, to third, but the Broncos had two runners thrown out at the plate to end the threat. Juan Parra’s attempted squeeze bunt was fielded by Mustang catcher Justin Hensley and he tagged Madden out for the second out of the inning. Matt Long followed with a single to right, but Crocker threw a strike to Hensley to get Parra for the final out of the inning.

DeVincenzi pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning and senior right-hander Eric Massingham tossed a scoreless ninth, striking out one, for his fifth save.

Cal Poly scored three times in the fourth inning and never looked back.

Junior designated hitter Luke Yoder doubled to lead off the inning, Crocker grounded out to second base to advance Yoder to third and Thompson beat the throw to first base on a sacrifice bunt attempt to drive in Yoder. Lee reached base on a throwing error to allow the second run to score and junior left fielder Adam Melker tripled to center field to knock in Lee.

Solo home runs by Buschini and Crocker in the next two frames extended Cal Poly's lead to 5-2 before Santa Clara scored twice in the seventh.

Trailing by a run, the Broncos produced just one base runner in the final two frames -- a two-out single by Madden in the ninth. Massingham struck out pinch hitter David Abraham to end the game.

Freshman right-hander Paul Twining (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing all five runs and nine hits in five-plus innings. Jason Westerberg threw three scoreless innings in relief for the Broncos with one strikeout.

Cal Poly, bidding for its first NCAA regional playoff berth since moving to Division I prior to the 1995 season, hosts UC Riverside for a three-game Big West Conference series Friday through Sunday in Baggett Stadium.
