SURPRISE, Ariz. – Four solo home runs by Cal Poly were not enough as the Mustangs, who led 4-2, 7-5 and 8-7, fell to No. 2 Arizona State 12-9 on the first day of the eighth annual Coca-Cola Classic baseball tournament on Thursday night in Surprise Stadium.
Third baseman Raoul Torrez belted a grand slam in the seventh inning to snap an 8-8 tie as the Sun Devils, despite being outhit 12-11, improved to 8-0 on the season.
Cal Poly fell to 3-5.
Designated hitter Luke Yoder, first baseman David Van Ostrand, catcher Ross Brayton and shortstop J.J. Thompson all belted solo home runs for Cal Poly, which had hit just five homers in its first seven games of the season.
The Mustangs scored in seven of their nine at-bats, but Arizona State scored 10 times in the fifth, sixth and seven frames to assume control of the game.
A two-out error eventually led to three unearned Sun Devil runs in the sixth and a 7-5 Arizona State lead.
After Cal Poly battled back with three runs in the top of the seventh on a two-run single by second baseman Matt Jensen and Van Ostrand’s RBI single down the right-field line, Arizona State tallied five in the bottom of the seventh on a leadoff home run by Riccio Torrez and the grand slam by Raoul Torrez.
Cal Poly’s 12-hit attack was paced by Yoder and Jensen (pictured above) with three hits apiece. One of Jensen’s hits was a triple. Van Ostrand and Brayton each added a pair of hits.
Riccio Torrez along with Kole Calhoun and Zack MacPhee each had two hits for Arizona State.
Mitchell Lambson (1-0), the second of four Arizona State pitchers, picked up the win. Starter Seth Blair allowed five runs and six hits in six innings.
The loss went to Mustang junior southpaw Matt Leonard (0-2), who gave up nine runs (six earned) and 10 hits in six-plus innings. Senior right-hander Mark DeVincenzi gave up three runs and a hit in one inning while sophomore righty Jeff Johnson tossed a scoreless eighth inning.
Cal Poly will face Utah Valley in a matchup of 3-5 clubs Friday at 3 p.m. PST on the second day of the Coca-Cola Classic. The Mustangs also take on Florida International (7-0) on Saturday at 3 p.m. and Oregon State (6-2) on Sunday at noon.
Florida International edged Utah Valley 5-4 on Friday while Oregon State was a 10-3 winner over UC Riverside.
