SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Sophomore catcher Jordan Hadlock drove in four runs with four hits, including a triple, to lead Cal Poly to a 13-3 victory over Northern Illinois in a non-conference baseball game on a chilly Tuesday night in Baggett Stadium.
Sophomore second baseman Matt Jensen added three hits and an RBI while center fielder Adam Melker, catcher/first baseman Ross Brayton, right fielder Mitch Haniger and third baseman J.J. Thompson each added two hits as Cal Poly put together a 20-hit offensive attack.
Sophomore right-hander Mason Radeke earned his third win with four solid innings of work on the mound, matching his career high with eight strikeouts. Radeke has struck out 23 batters in 18 1/3 innings this season.
Cal Poly improved to 5-6 with the win while Northern Illinois, in the midst of a nine-game California swing, fell to 3-7. The Huskies swept a three-game series at Cal State Bakersfield last weekend and, following Wednesday night’s game with the Mustangs, will conclude their trip with four games over the weekend at UC Santa Barbara.
Hadlock (pictured above) went 4-for-5 and scored twice, lifting his average for the season to .857 (six of seven).
Cal Poly erupted for seven runs in the first inning and never looked back, adding single runs in the second and fifth innings and breaking the game open with a four-run seventh.
Northern Illinois’ 13-hit attack was paced by third baseman Troy White with four hits, all singles. Alex Jones and Alex Beckmann each added a single and double.
Jeff Johnson pitched three innings in relief of Radeke, allowing one run and four hits. Mark Laugenour and Andrew Bruder each pitched an inning in relief in their first appearances on the mound this season.
The four Mustang pitchers combined for 16 strikeouts. Offensively, Cal Poly took advantage of seven walks and a trio of Northern Illinois errors.
The loss went to NIU starter Brian Smith (0-2), who gave up eight runs (six earned) and 11 hits in two innings.
Senior right-hander DJ Mauldin (0-0, 18.00 ERA) will start for Cal Poly on Wednesday night against Northern Illinois senior southpaw Chuck Lukanen (1-2, 6.62 ERA).
