SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Sophomore right-hander Michael Goodnight held Cal Poly to two runs and five hits in six innings for his third win of the season as Houston defeated the Mustangs 6-2 in the second game of a three-game non-conference baseball series Saturday night before 1,070 in Baggett Stadium.
Goodnight (3-1) walked five and struck out six for the Cougars (7-5).
Cal Poly, which mustered single runs in the first and fourth innings, fell to 6-8. The Mustangs had the lead in four of their eight losses this season, but couldn’t hold on.
Houston overcame an early 2-0 deficit to win the series opener Friday, 13-8.
Designated hitter M.P. Cokinos hit a solo home run while shortstop Blake Kelso, center fielder Joel Ansley and left fielder Caleb Ramsey each had two hits as Houston outhit Cal Poly 10-9.
Sparking the Mustangs offensively were their three outfielders -- Adam Melker, Mitch Haniger and Bobby Crocker, each with a pair of hits.
Melker’s single and double extended his hitting streak to 13 games.
Sophomore southpaw Kyle Anderson (1-2) allowed three runs and five hits in two innings in absorbing the loss. True freshman right-hander Joey Wagman pitched 5 1/3 strong innings in relief, allowing two runs and three hits with five walks and seven strikeouts.
Cal Poly took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on catcher Ross Brayton’s groundout.
After Houston scored three times in the top of the second, the Mustangs closed the gap to 3-2 in the fourth as designated hitter Luke Yoder drew a two-out bases-loaded walk.
The visiting Cougars pulled away with a run in the fifth and two more in the eighth.
Final game of the series is set for Sunday at 1 o’clock in Baggett Stadium, with sophomore right-hander Mason Radeke ( 3-0, 2.45 ERA) of Cal Poly to face Houston freshman right-hander Eric Brooks (0-2, 20.25 ERA).
