SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Cal Poly’s men’s soccer team will host a spring exhibition match with the rising stars of internationally renowned Club América on Friday, May 29 at Alex G. Spanos Stadium at 8 p.m.
Tickets are on sale and may be purchased at the Cal Poly box office on South Perimeter Road, online at GoPoly.com or over the phone at 1-866-GO-STANGS. Pre-sale tickets begin at $5 and are still available. A full list of ticket options is available below.
Club América’s travel roster includes first-team defender George Corral, a pair of players in the Mexican National Team system, up-and-coming club prospects and acclaimed coach Alfredo Tena Garduño.
Featuring Club América’s future stars, the reserve team is highlighted by Corral, who made his debut for the first-team last season, midfielder Luis Ernesto Olascoaga, who helped the Mexico U-18 National Team earn the 2009 Mediterranean International Cup title, and Mexico U-20 National Team goalkeeper Hugo González Durán.
Other key players for the Club América reserves, also known as Socio Águila, include rising midfielder Hugo García Pedraza and club prospects Treviño Tripp and Ernesto Vázquez Muños.
The Club América reserves are coached by Tena, a legendary defender who played for Club América from 1973-1991. He led Club América to several league titles and was a member of the Mexican National Team during his playing career. As a coach, Tena has won Primera División championships with Santos Laguna in 1996 and Pachuca in 2001.
Club América’s reserves compete in the Primera División A, the second-highest level of Mexican soccer. The squad includes a bevy of up-and-coming national players, including Mexican U-20 National Team goalkeeper Hugo González Durán.
Cal Poly is coming off its most successful campaign in program history. The Mustangs finished 11-6-6 overall and qualified for its first NCAA Tournament since 1995. Cal Poly defeated UCLA in its opening match of the tournament to advance to the second round for the first time at the Division I level. The Mustangs would garner numerous post-season accolades, including a No. 3 national attendance ranking. Highlighting the big crowds of 2008 was a sellout 11,075 on Oct. 17, a nationally televised match with Central Coast rival UC Santa Barbara; it was the third-largest attended match in NCAA regular season history.
The Club América match will cap the Mustangs’ spring season. Cal Poly will reconvene in August for the start of the 2009 NCAA season.
