SAN LUIS OBISPO – Senior forward Megan Harrison scored a team-high 16 points and junior guard Ashlee Stewart tied a career best with 15 as the Cal Poly women’s basketball program began its Courtyard by Marriott San Luis Obispo Holiday Beach Classic schedule with a 69-62 victory against Missouri-Kansas City in Mott Gym Friday afternoon.
Sophomore forward Kristina Santiago added 10 points for Cal Poly (3-2), which allowed the opening basket of the game before leading for the final 37 minutes and outrebounding the Roos, 53-40. Stewart, who had notched just four points during Cal Poly’s opening four games this season, exploded with 13 during the second half and finished with a game-high seven assists. Harrison’s 16-point effort included a trio of three-pointers and pushed her career scoring total to 1,075. She needs just two points during Cal Poly’s 3 p.m. Saturday matchup against former Big West Conference foe Idaho (0-3) to supplant Sherrie Atteberry (1983-87) as the third-leading scorer in Mustang history. UMKC (1-3) completes its tournament slate Saturday at 1 p.m. versus Cal State Bakersfield (2-1).
A jumper by Mustang junior forward Becky Tratter – one of four she sank during the afternoon – provided Cal Poly a 7-5 lead less than three minutes into action. The Mustang defense, which held UMKC to a 29 percent field goal mark during the first half, limited the Roos to just a single basket during the ensuing six minutes to build a 19-9 lead.
Leading 34-22 at halftime, Cal Poly posted a 7-0 run out of intermission to snare its largest lead of the day at 41-22 with 17 minutes remaining. UMKC, which sunk five three-pointers and all nine of its free throw attempts during the second half, steadily eased Cal Poly’s lead to 53-47 with five minutes to play. Stewart, however, sunk the last of her three three-pointers during the next Mustang possession and UMKC failed to threaten the Cal Poly lead down the stretch.
Santiago and Harrison each grabbed five boards for Cal Poly, which outrebounded UMKC on the offensive glass, 24-10.
