SAN LUIS OBISPO – Sophomore forward Kristina Santiago scored a game-high 23 points and senior forward Megan Harrison recorded 18 points and 10 rebounds to cement Cal Poly’s first double-double of the season Saturday afternoon as the Mustang women’s basketball team posted its sixth-straight victory by defeating Cal State Fullerton in Mott Gym, 72-61.
Freshman post Abby Bloetscher added nine rebounds for Cal Poly (15-7, 7-3), which held Cal State Fullerton (6-15, 3-7) to a .262 (16-for-61) field goal percentage that doubled as the lowest figure by a Mustang opponent this season. With the victory, Cal Poly (15-7, 7-3) not only cemented the program’s first 15-win season since the 1991-92 campaign, but held serve in the Big West Conference title chase. Entering their Saturday, Feb. 14 home matchup versus UC Santa Barbara at 4 p.m., the Mustangs trail the conference-leading Gauchos (15-7, 10-0) by three games in the Big West standings. Cal Poly can also ensure the program’s first winning season in 17 years with a victory versus UC Santa Barbara.
During the first meeting between the two programs Jan. 8 in Titan Gym, Cal State Fullerton posted a 67-53 victory. Cal Poly, however, left no doubt regarding the outcome of Saturday’s decision. Spurred by three-straight jumpers from Harrison, Cal Poly stampeded to a 13-0 lead after just three-and-a-half minutes. Cal Poly, which sunk its initial three three-point attempts, shot 73.3 percent from the field during the opening 10 minutes in building a 25-11 lead. The Mustangs led 39-25 at intermission with only Cal State Fullerton’s .909 (10-for-11) free throw percentage keeping the scoreline relatively close.
Leading 51-35 with 14-and-a-half minutes remaining, the Mustangs held Cal State Fullerton to just a single Ashley Richie jumper during the ensuing four minutes to snag their largest lead of the evening at 61-37. The Titans, however, did finish the game with a 88.9 (24-for-27) percent figure from the free throw line that was the highest single-game total by a Mustang opponent this season.
Cal Poly’s six-game winning streak is the program’s longest since winning eight consecutive decisions during the 2006-07 campaign. Santiago has also reached double-digit scoring figures during her previous 17 outings.
