SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – A pair of goals by forward Kelley O’Hara led the No. 4 Cardinal to a 2-1 win over the Cal Poly women’s soccer team in the Mustangs 2009 season-opener at Alex G. Spanos Stadium in San Luis Obispo on Friday night.

With the win Stanford improves to 2-0 while the Mustangs fall to 0-1 for the season.

In a scoreless first half both teams miss opportunities to take a lead. For Stanford, the first major chance came in the 15th minute of play when O’Hara flicked a pass to Courtney Verloo who bounced a shot off the top of the crossbar from 15 yards out and had it land just short of the line. Coral Hoover scooped it up for the save.

The Mustangs chance came in the 25th minute when Afton Thulin received a pass from Morgan Miller and glanced her shot of the top of the crossbar.

For the Mustangs it was just one of two shots in the half while Stanford kept the Mustang goalie busy with 20 shots. Hoover made six saves in the half.

Stanford opened the scoring in the second half in the 53 min. (52:04) when Mustang defender Julianne Grinstead inadvertently was called for a hand ball in the box.

O’Hara capitalized on the penalty kick by driving the ball into the right side of the net for her third goal of the season.

The Cardinal scored their second goal five minutes later when O’Hara lofted a shot from the left side and into the right corner of the net for the team’s second goal and her fourth of the season. The goal came unassisted.

The Mustangs pulled within one when a Stanford defender was whistled for a foul in the box. Kristina Condon-Sherwood took the penalty kick for the Mustangs and fired the ball into the right side of the net beating the Stanford goalkeeper.

Overall the Cardinal dominated the game with a Cal Poly opponent school record 40 shots (27 by Stanford on Nov. 15, 2002 and by Santa Clara on Oct. 14, 1999). The Mustangs managed six shots, three on goal.

Cal Poly’s Hoover recorded 15 saves in the game while Kira Maker had two for Stanford.

Junior Monica Hemenez was the only Mustangs with more then one shot, recording two, one on goal.

O’Hara and Christen Press had 10 shots each to pace the Cardinal.

Stanford managed 10 corner kicks to Cal Poly’s two while being whistled for 11 fouls compared to five for the Mustangs.

Stanford’s Alina Garciamendez was yellow carded late in the game (81:33) for a hard foul.

The Mustangs return to action on Sunday when they travel to Salt Lake City to face the Utes of the University of Utah with game time set for 12 noon (PST).
