Thulin Goal in Overtime Brings Down Tigers
STOCKTON, Calif. – A goal by Afton Thulin in the 99th minute propelled the Cal Poly Mustangs to a 1-0 overtime win over Pacific in a Big West Conference women’s soccer game Friday night. STOCKTON, Calif. – A goal by Afton Thulin in the 99th minute propelled the Cal Poly Mustangs to a 1-0 overtime win over Pacific in a Big West Conference women’s soccer game Friday night. With the win Cal Poly improves to 12-5 overall and 6-1 in Big West play while Pacific falls to 9-5-2 and 3-2 in BWC play.
Thulin's first goal of the season eight minutes and eight seconds into the first overtime period came unassisted after Whitney Sisler’s shot was blocked. Thulin picked up the deflected ball and fired the winning goal into an undefended net. Mustang goalie
Coral Hoover picked up her eighth shutout of the season and her fifth in a row, making six saves.
The game opened with Cal Poly sophomore Bianca Burright taking the first shot on goal three minutes into the match, but Tiger goalie Jill Medigovich was able to make the save.
UOP had its first opportunity when Natalie Wong took a header off a corner kick, forcing a save by Hoover.
In the eighth minute freshman Cici Kobinski had her opportunity when she fired off a shot, but Medigovich made the save.
UOP went on the offensive attack with four shots in a five-minute period with Hoover making two saves.
Pacific maintained the offensive attack in the 20th minute with two more shots before Cal Poly responded with junior Morgan Miller firing wide.
Pacific responded in the 34th minute with a shot from Laura Hogan that went high. Wong followed with her second shot that was blocked by a Cal Poly defender when Alex Topp was whistled for a yellow card in the 36th minute.
Burright followed with her second shot of the game and for the second time forced a save by Medigovich.
Kim Hargrave ended the scoring opportunities and a scoreless first half with a shot in the 43rd minute, with Hoover making the save.
Overall in the half Pacific fired off 11 shots with three on goal, with Cal Poly taking four shots with four on goal.
Pacific opened the second half with a shot by Angelica Figueroa that went wide in the 46th minute.
The Tigers backed it up in the 49th minute with a shot by Kiristina Wavomba that went wide.
The Mustangs had their first opportunity in the second half when Kristina Condon-Sherwood had a shot blocked by a UOP defender.
UOP responded with two shots, one on goal by Figureroa, with Hoover making the save.
The teams traded shots over the next 20 minutes with nothing to show.
The intensity of play picked up in the 77th minute when Condon-Sherwood was whistled for a yellow card while UOP’s Kylee Choy was also called for a yellow card in the 81st minute.
The Mustangs made a solid push late in the half when Bria Park took a shot backed up by a shot on goal in the 89th minute by Burright whose shot went wide.
A Pacific header by Wong off the cross bar in the 95th minute coming off a corner kick was the Tigers’ best scoring opportunity of the game.
Overall Cal Poly was outshot 24-13 while each team had six shots on goal.
Hoover earned her 12th win of the season with six saves while Medigovich took the loss with four.
The Mustangs return to the field for the team’s final regular season game on Nov. 1 when they travel to Central Coast rival UC Santa Barbra for a 1 pm game.
