SAN LUIS OBISPO – Despite suffering losses at the top-three singles positions, the Cal Poly women’s tennis team rallied during the back end of individual play and captured the doubles point for the 10th time in 11 outings this spring to post a 4-3 victory against Pacific on Sunday morning at Mustang Courts.

The No. 1 senior doubles pairing of Brittany Blalock and Suzie Matzenauer opened play with an 8-3 victory against Pacific’s Sasha Fisher and Jenifer Widjaja. At No. 2, the tandem of senior Steffi Wong and freshman Alexa Lee – slotted No. 59 in the March 2 edition of the NCAA Division I Doubles Rankings – stayed perfect in 11 matches this year by handing Julia Hansen and Sarah Irvin an 8-2 defeat. Cal Poly completed the sweep at No. 3 as senior Diane Filip (above) and junior Ashley Pane defeated Christina Goehl and Olga Gumenyuk, 8-7 (4).

During the only ranked matchup of the day, Widjaja, rated No. 73 in Division I, downed the 93rd-ranked Matzenauer at No. 1 singles, 4-6, 6-0, 6-4. Blalock suffered a 6-2, 1-6, 7-5 loss at No. 2 against Goehl while Hansen upended Wong at No. 3, 6-1, 7-6. The match began to swing back in Cal Poly’s favor at No. 4, where Filip edged Gumenyuk, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1. At No. 5, Lee defeated Kateryna Nezhura, 6-3, 6-3, before Mustang sophomore Jocelyn Davis solidified Cal Poly’s fifth-straight Big West victory with a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Fisher.

“After defeating UC Santa Barbara on Friday, 4-3, we played another close and competitive Big West match. I thought the difference today was our dominant play at No. 1 and 2 doubles because Pacific is loaded at the top of its lineup,” Cal Poly head coach Hugh Bream said. “I feel the biggest strengths of our team remain our doubles play and just how hard everyone competes from No. 1 through 6 in singles.”

Cal Poly (9-2, 5-1) continues its six-match homestand on Tuesday, March 9 at 1:30 p.m. against Michigan State.
