SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – One day after losing by a run to one Pacific-10 Conference school, the Cal Poly baseball team beat another, upsetting No. 16 Cal 8-2 in a non-conference game Wednesday night in Baggett Stadium.
The Mustangs, who let a 7-1 lead slip away in a 10-8 loss to the Golden Bears last week, scored three times in the second inning and never looked back, improving to 19-23 on the season, Cal has lost four straight, falling to 27-14-2 overall.
Cal Poly, a 4-3 loser to USC on Tuesday night, rode the combined six-hit pitching of senior right-hander Brian Grening and sophomore righty Kevin Castner to its fifth victory against a top-25 school this season.
Grening (3-3) pitched the first 5 2/3 innings for the win, allowing two runs and five hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Castner earned his first save by tossing 3 1/3 scoreless innings in relief, walking three and also striking out five.
The loss went to Cal starter Brian Diemer (0-1), who gave up the three runs to the Mustangs in the second inning.
Senior second baseman Pat Pezet singled to drive in the first run in the second frame. Junior catcher Justin Hensley tripled to left-center field for the second run and trotted home when the throw from the outfield was dropped for an error.
Cal cut the 3-0 deficit to a single run with solo home runs by first baseman David Cooper, his 17th of the year, in the third inning and second baseman Josh Satin, his 14th, in the sixth.
But Cal Poly added two insurance runs in the seventh and broke the game open with a three-run eighth-inning uprising.
Sophomore first baseman Wes Dorrell’s sacrifice fly to left made it 4-2 and junior third baseman Brent Morel scored from first base when Cal third baseman Jeff Kobernus, who cut off the throw from the outfield, threw the ball into right field in an attempt to get Morel at second base.
In the Mustang eighth, junior center fielder Logan Schafer singled up the middle for one RBI and Cal Poly scored its final two runs on Cal errors.
The Golden Bears committed four errors, resulting in a pair of unearned Mustang runs.
Schafer ended an 0-for-18 slump with two singles Wednesday. Pezet and sophomore left fielder Luke Yoder also had two hits apiece for Cal Poly.
Cal’s six hits included two each by Cooper and Satin.
The Mustangs, who have won 10 of their last 16 games, finished their first winning month, going 10-9 in April. They were 2-3 in February and 7-11 in March.
Cal Poly entertains UNLV (19-25) for a three-game non-conference series this weekend in Baggett Stadium. The Rebels lost twice at Cal State Northridge earlier this week.
Games Friday and Saturday start at 6 p.m., followed by the 1 p.m. series finale Sunday.
