FRESNO, Calif. – Three-run home runs by Wes Dorrell and Bobby Crocker powered Cal Poly to a 13-11 victory over defending national champion and 19th-ranked Fresno State in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday night before 2,761 at Pete Beiden Field.

Dorrell gave Cal Poly a 6-4 lead with his shot in the fourth inning and Crocker provided the Mustangs with the lead for good with his blast in the eighth frame.

The Mustangs, who won two of three games against then-No. 3 Rice over the weekend, improved to 3-1 on the year. Fresno State fell to 2-2.

Adam Buschini singled three times, drove in three runs and scored three times as Cal Poly outhit Fresno State 14-10. Ryan Lee, Ross Brayton, Kyle Smith and Dorrell each added two hits – Dorrell finishing with four RBIs.

Fresno State’s hits included two each by Danny Muno, Tommy Mendonca, Steve Detwiler and Brennan Gowens.

Senior southpaw Jared Eskew (1-0), the fourth Mustang pitcher of the game, earned the win, allowing no runs and one hit over 2 1/3 innings with one walk and five strikeouts.

Derek Benny (0-1), who surrendered the decisive home run to Crocker in the eighth inning, suffered the loss for Fresno State.

Cal Poly held 1-0, 6-4 and 9-6 leads, but couldn’t hold onto them.

Lee drew a walk opening the game and eventually scored on a wild pitch for the 1-0 Mustang lead.

Fresno State answered with a pair of runs in both the first and second innings for a 4-1 cushion. Big blow was a two-run home run by Gowens in the second frame.

Cal Poly scored a run in the third on a ground-rule double down the left-field line by Dorrell and took a 6-4 lead with three runs in the fourth. Buschini singled to drive in the first run and Dorrell belted his three-run home run to right, his first of the season and 12th of his career.

The Bulldogs scored twice in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 6-6, but Cal Poly regained the lead in the fifth on a run-scoring single by Lee and a two-run single by Buschini for a 9-6 advantage.

Back came the Bulldogs with two in the fifth and three in the seventh for a 11-9 lead.

In the Mustang eighth, Buschini singled, Dorrell walked and Crocker smashed his first college home run, a three-run shot over the right-field wall, to give Cal Poly a 12-11 lead.

Freshman second baseman Matt Jensen followed with his second round-tripper of the year, a solo shot to left as the Mustangs led 13-11. Jensen hit a three-run home run against Rice last weekend.

Fresno State produced a one-out single by Grubb in the eighth and a leadoff walk by Jace Brown in the ninth, but couldn’t capitalize. After giving up the walk, Eskew struck out the side to close out the game.

Each team committed three errors.

The Mustangs have beaten the Bulldogs 14 times in their last 16 meetings. In Fresno, however, Cal Poly had lost two straight by scores of 10-9 and 13-11, both in 2008, prior to Tuesday night's victory.

Cal Poly will host Sacramento State (1-2) for a three-game non-conference series Friday through Sunday in Baggett Stadium. First pitch Friday and Saturday will be at 6 p.m., with the series finale Sunday to start at 1 o’clock.

Sacramento State, which won one of three games against Arizona last weekend in Tucson was to play Pacific on Tuesday, but that game was postponed due to poor field conditions as a result of Monday’s rainfall.
