No. 12/19 Mustangs Rally to Beat Cal State Bakersfield, 18-15

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Mark DeVincenzi and Eric Massingham combined to pitch five scoreless innings in relief and No. 12/19 Cal Poly exploded for 18 runs on 16 hits en route to an 18-15 come-from-behind victory over Cal State Bakersfield on Monday at Hardt Park.
The win gave the Mustangs a four-game series sweep, extended their winning streak to six games and improved Cal Poly’s record to 15-4. Cal State Bakersfield fell to 4-14.
DeVincenzi (2-0) came into the game in the fifth inning and retired all three batters he faced, two on sacrifice flies as Cal State Bakersfield took a 15-14 lead. DeVincenzi allowed no wins and one hit in three innings with one walk and three strikeouts.
Massingham picked up his second save of the season by allowing two harmless singles in the final two innings with no walks and no strikeouts.
Cal Poly let 3-0, 9-7 and 14-11 leads slip away as Cal State Bakersfield rallied for 7-3, 11-9 and 15-14 advantages.
But the Mustangs scored twice in both the eighth and ninth innings to secure the victory.
Adam Buschini tripled with one out in the eighth and scored on an RBI single by Matt Jensen, tying the game at 15-15. D.J. Gentile’s grounder to second base knocked in the go-ahead run.
In the Mustang ninth, Ryan Lee’s safety squeeze bunt and Bobby Crocker’s RBI single to left field tallied two insurance runs.
The loss went to Cal State Bakersfield junior southpaw Sam Jones (0-3), who allowed seven runs and nine hits in 3 2/3 innings.
Cal Poly’s top hitters were Wes Dorrell with three singles and Lee, Jensen, Luke Yoder and Ross Brayton, each with two hits. Yoder knocked in four runs. Kyle Smith added a three-run home run in the fifth inning which gave Cal Poly a 14-11 lead.
For Cal State Bakersfield, Martin Medina drove in six runs with a home run and a double. Stuart Smith and Jeremy Rodriguez each added three hits for the Roadrunners.
Cal Poly will host San Jose State on Tuesday night and Dartmouth on Wednesday night, both games starting at 6 p.m. in Baggett Stadium.
