SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Junior shortstop Kyle Smith went 4-for-5 and drove in seven runs, one shy of the school record, as No. 12/19 Cal Poly defeated San Jose State 17-9 in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday night in Baggett Stadium.

Smith hit a two-run home run, a two-run triple, an RBI single and a two-run single from the No. 9 spot in the order as the Mustangs won their seventh straight game and improved to 16-4 on the season. San Jose State, which dropped a 7-4 decision to Dartmouth earlier in the day, also at Baggett Stadium, is now 16-5.

Freshman second baseman Matt Jensen produced his sixth consecutive two-hit game for Cal Poly with a pair of singles, driving in one run.

Junior catcher Ross Brayton drove in three runs, two on a double and another on a groundout, while senior center fielder Ryan Lee, junior first baseman Wes Dorrell, junior left fielder Luke Yoder and junior right fielder Adam Melker each had two hits and an RBI for Cal Poly.

Dorrell has 20 hits in his last 38 at-bats, lifting his average to .397, while Jensen is 12-for-21 in his last six games and is now hitting .403 on the year. Lee is 16-for-37 in his last eight games and currently sports a .360 average.

Hits were even at 16 apiece and each team committed three errors, but Cal Poly took advantage of seven walks while issuing just one.

The win went to Mustang freshman starter Mason Radeke (1-0), despite giving up seven runs and 10 hits in five innings. Ryan Vander Tuig (1-1), the second of six San Jose State pitchers in the game, suffered the loss as he gave up the tying and go-ahead runs in the fifth inning.

Melker singled to right field to knot the score at 7-7 and Brayton broke the deadlock with a two-run double, also to right field.

San Jose State’s top hitter was right fielder Jacob Bruns with four hits, all singles, and a pair of RBIs. Center fielder Jason Martin, shortstop Kyle Bellows and designated hitter Karson Klauer each had two hits.

Yoder hit a solo home run in the third inning, his second of the year, to give Cal Poly a 4-0 lead, but San Jose State scored five times in the top of the fourth.

The Spartans led 7-6 before the Mustangs grabbed the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the fifth and pulled away, breaking the game open with a five-run eighth-inning rally. Smith, needing a double for the cycle, settled for a two-run single to highlight the rally.

Cal Poly has never had a player hit for the cycle since moving to Division I in 1995.

It was a ninth-inning suicide squeeze bunt by Smith that lifted Cal Poly to a 3-2 win over San Jose State on March 11 at Municipal Stadium in San Jose.

The Mustangs host Dartmouth (1-8) on Wednesday night at 6 in Baggett Stadium with freshman southpaw Kyle Anderson (0-0, 0.00 ERA) to start on the mound for the Mustangs. He pitched three scoreless innings against San Jose State two weeks ago in his only appearance on the mound this season.
