SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Junior first baseman Adam Buschini drove in four runs with a single and a home run as No. 12/14 Cal Poly defeated UC Santa Barbara 15-7 in the finale of a three-game Big West Conference baseball series Sunday afternoon at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium.

Buschini’s two-run single in the third ining gave the Mustangs a 3-2 lead and his two-run in the fourth, his fourth of the season, increased the Mustang lead to 6-2.

UC Santa Barbara rallied to catch Cal Poly at 6-6, but the Mustangs broke the game open with six runs in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh.

With the win, Cal Poly clinched the series, two games to one, has won nine of 10 weekend series this season, and improved to 29-10 on the year and 10-5 for second place in the Big West.

Cal Poly has already won five more games than in all of 2008 and has clinched its fifth winning season in the last six years.

UC Santa Barbara fell to 23-14 and 6-6 with Sunday’s loss.

Buschini, who had a five-RBI game earlier this season, was 2-for-5 with four RBI Sunday while sophomore third baseman J.J. Thompson added two singles, stretching his hitting streak to 10 games.

Freshman second baseman Matt Jensen knocked in three runs with a single and a pair of bases-loaded walks while junior right fielder Adam Melker also had three RBIs.

Designated hitter Shane Cook had two hits and an RBI for UC Santa Barbara.

Freshman right-hander Mason Radeke (4-1), a Santa Barbara High School graduate, allowed six runs and eight hits in six innings for the victory. He walked two, struck out four and threw 120 pitches.

Senior southpaw Jared Eskew tossed three scoreless innings in relief for his first save.

The loss went to Greg Davis (1-1), the second of five Gaucho pitchers, as he gave up five runs on just two hits in 1 2/3 innings with two walks and one strikeout.

Gaucho starter Zach Samuels allowed six runs and six hits in four innings with two walks and four strikeouts.

Cal Poly's six-run sixth-inning rally which snapped a 6-6 tie was highlighted by Melker's pinch-hit two-run single and sophomore designated hitter D.J. Gentile's three-run home run to right, his fifth of the year.

The Mustangs added two more runs in the seventh on bases-loaded walks issued to Jensen and Melker and scored their final run in the ninth on an RBI single by Jensen.

Buschini was 5-for-12 in the series with two home runs, three runs scored and eight RBI while junior left fielder Luke Yoder was 3-for-8 with a home run and Jensen 4-for-11 with three runs scored and four RBI.

Cal Poly will play five non-conference games next week. The Mustangs host defending national champion Fresno State (20-22) on Tuesday at 6 p.m., then visit Saint Mary’s on Wednesday afternoon before returning home to host San Francisco (22-22) for a three-game series Friday through Sunday in Baggett Stadium.
