SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Cal Poly erupted for five runs in the eighth inning to turn a 4-2 deficit into a 7-4 victory over San Francisco in the final game of a three-game non-conference baseball series Sunday afternoon before 1,132 in Baggett Stadium.
The 13th-ranked Mustangs produced the rally with five hits, a hit batsman, a sacrifice fly, a walk, a balk and a throwing error en route to clinching the series, two games to one. The Mustangs and Dons split a Saturday doubleheader -- USF winning the opener 8-5 and Cal Poly taking the nightcap in 11 innings, 12-9.
Cal Poly, which has won 10 of 11 weekend series this season and 20 of 22 home games, improved to 32-12 with Sunday’s victory. San Francisco fell to 23-25.
The Mustangs are 20 games above the .500 mark for the second time this season, matching the school Division I record set by the 2004 squad which was 33-13-1 en route to a 38-23-1 campaign.
Senior center fielder Ryan Lee led off the eight and was hit by a pitch. Junior right fielder Adam Melker singled to left-center, Lee taking third. Junior second baseman Adam Buschini doubled down the left-field line to score Lee.
After a USF pitching change, sophomore designated hitter D.J. Gentile’s second sacrifice fly of the game and 11th of the season -- a Cal Poly Division I record -- scored Melker and tied the game at 4-4. Junior left fielder Luke Yoder’s infield single and subsequent throwing error allowed Buschini to score the go-ahead run.
Yoder took third on a balk and scored on freshman Bobby Crocker’s groundout to second base. Back-to-back doubles by junior shortstop Kyle Smith and sophomore third baseman J.J. Thompson produced the final run of the rally.
Junior right-hander Mark DeVincenzi struck out two of three USF batters in the ninth to seal the victory. DeVincenzi (5-1) worked 1 2/3 innings in relief of starter Mason Radeke for the win. Radeke allowed four runs and eight hits in 7 1/3 innings with two walks and five strikeouts.
The loss went to Jonathan Abramson as he gave up the first three runs of the eighth inning.
Cal Poly scored single runs in the third and sixth innings.
Thompson’s sixth home run of the season to straightaway center field in the third inning gave the Mustangs a 1-0 lead. After the Dons scored twice in both the fourth and sixth innings for a 4-1 advantage, Cal Poly trimmed the deficit to two as Melker led off the sixth with a double and eventually scored on Gentile’s first sacrifice fly to right field.
Cal Poly, which has won 20 games in come-from-behind fashion, outhit San Francisco 9-8, led by Thompson with three hits and a pair of RBIs. His third-inning home run stretched his hitting streak to 15 games. Melker added two hits.
For San Francisco, third baseman Stephen Yarrow doubled three times after his second-inning walk. First baseman Nik Balog added two singles while catcher Ryan Lipkin hit a two-run home run in the sixth inning, his fourth of the year.
For the series, Buschini went 8-for-15 with three doubles, a triple, a home run and five RBI. Smith was 6-for-12 with three doubles, a home run and three RBI while Yoder was 5-for-11 with a home run and five RBI, including the three-run round-tripper in the 11th inning Saturday night. Melker was 4-for-9 with a double.
Cal Poly visits USC for a 6:30 p.m. single game Tuesday, then returns home to host Cal State Fullerton for a three-game Big West Conference series Friday through Sunday in Baggett Stadium.
