SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Junior shortstop Kyle Smith and junior first baseman Wes Dorrell combined for six hits and five RBI as No. 12/16 Cal Poly defeated No. 6/5 Cal State Fullerton 7-4 in the finale of a three-game Big West Conference baseball series Sunday afternoon in Baggett Stadium.
Smith doubled in a pair of runs in the fourth inning to snap a 1-1 tie and singled twice, driving in another run in the seventh.
Dorrell finished one single short of Cal Poly’s first Division I cycle as he hit a solo home run in the fifth inning, doubled to knock in another run in the seventh and tripled to right field in the third inning but was thrown out at the plate trying for an inside-the-park home run. Dorrell has four home runs this season.
With the win, Cal Poly salvaged one triumph in the series, snapped a three-game losing streak – the Mustangs have not lost four straight this season – and improved to 33-15 for the season and 11-7 in Big West games, alone in third place.
UC Santa Barbara scored seven runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to turn an 8-4 deficit into an 11-9 victory over Long Beach State, knocking the 49ers out of a tie for third place with a series sweep.
Cal State Fullerton, which had a seven-game winning streak snapped, fell to 36-13 and 14-7 for second place in the Big West. The Titahs lost for just the second time in their last 15 games.
Cal Poly has won four of its last nine games against the perennial Big West powerhouse Titans.
Mustang freshman right-hander Mason Radeke (5-1) pitched a career-high eight innings for the win against the Titans, walking two and striking out five. He allowed four runs and nine hits.
Senior right-hander Eric Massingham tossed a scoreless ninth for his fourth save.
The loss went to Tyler Pill (8-2), also a freshman right-hander, as he gave up six runs and nine hits in 6 2/3 innings with one walk and three strikeouts.
Cal State Fullerton’s 10-hit offensive attack was paced by shortstop Christian Colon with a single, double and triple. Designated hitter Nick Ramirez and third baseman Joey Siddons each added two hits. One of Ramirez’s hits was a solo home run in the eighth inning, his eighth of the year.
Each team scored a run in the first inning.
Josh Fellhauer’s groundout tallied the Titan run while junior right fielder Adam Melker singled and eventually scored on a passed ball for the Mustangs.
Cal Poly took the lead for good with three runs in the fourth inning.
Smith’s double down the left-field line scored two runs and freshman pinch-hitter Bobby Crocker’s grounder to shortstop gave the Mustangs a 4-1 advantage.
Colon tripled and left fielder Garry Brown singled to cut Cal Poly’s lead to 4-2 in the fifth but Cal Poly answered quickly in the bottom of the fifth on Dorrell’s home run to right field.
The Titans again trimmed the deficit to two runs with a tally in the sixth on doubles by first baseman Jared Clark and Ramirez.
Cal Poly scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to extend its lead to 7-3. With two outs, junior second baseman Adam Buschini was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on Dorrell’s double to left-center field. Smith’s infield hit to third base with the bases loaded pushed across the final Mustang run of the game.
Ramirez homered for Cal State Fullerton in the eighth and the Titans had one baserunner in the ninth on a two-out single by Colon before Massingham closed the door by inducing Brown to pop up to Buschini.
Smith went 5-for-10 in the series with three RBI while Dorrell was 5-for-12 and Buschini 4-for-10.
Sunday’s game attracted 1,778 fans, bringing the three-game series total to 5,532, No. 4 on Cal Poly’s all-time Baggett Stadium attendance list for a series.
The Mustangs will host Pepperdine for a single non-conference game Tuesday night at 6 in Baggett Stadium before returning to Big West play Friday through Sunday with a three-game series at Long Beach State.
