LONG BEACH, Calif. – Junior right-hander DJ Mauldin scattered 10 hits in a complete-game performance and junior right fielder Adam Melker’s pinch-hit bases-loaded double broke the game open in the ninth inning as No. 18/22 Cal Poly defeated Long Beach State 6-3 in a Big West Conference baseball game Friday night at Blair Field.
Cal Poly’s second win in 10 years at Blair Field elevated the Mustangs' overall record to 34-16 and conference record to 12-7 for third place. Long Beach State fell to 24-25 and 10-9 with its fifth straight loss.
Mauldin (5-4) struck out three and did not walk a batter en route to his second complete game of the year, throwing 118 pitches. His other complete game was a 13-strikeout 3-2 loss at Houston on March 8.
Cal Poly never trailed, scoring single runs in the first, second and fifth innings for a 3-2 cushion and setting the stage for Melker’s two-run double in the ninth. A passed ball lifted the Mustangs’ lead to 6-2 and Mauldin surrendered a harmless run in the bottom of the ninth for the win.
Senior center fielder Ryan Lee, freshman right fielder Bobby Crocker and junior first baseman Wes Dorrell each had two of Cal Poly’s 11 hits.
Shortstop Devin Lohman was 4-for-4 for the 49ers, all singles. First baseman Taylor Krick added two hits.
The loss went to 49er southpaw Adam Wilk (7-3), who allowed three runs and nine hits in seven innings with one walk and six strikeouts.
Cal Poly scored in the first inning on junior shortstop Kyle Smith’s single to right-center field.
Lee singled to right-center field to break a 1-1 tie in the second inning and Crocker doubled and came home on junior second baseman Adam Buschini’s RBI single in the fifth to snap a 2-2 deadlock.
Second game of the series will be played Saturday at 2 p.m. with sophomore southpaw Matt Leonard (5-2, 6.92 ERA) on the mound for Cal Poly.
