SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Cal Poly second baseman Matt Jensen, named to the 2009 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American Team last week, also has landed on the 2009 Pro-Line Athletic/NCBWA Division I Freshman All-American First Team.

Jensen is one of 37 freshmen selected on two teams by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association. A total of 17 conferences and 10 conference champions are represented and 12 conference rookies of the year were honored.

Jensen (5-10, 190, Clovis East HS), who hit .375 before a fractured collarbone ended his 2009 baseball season, earned Big West Conference Freshman Player of the Year honors and was named to the All-Big West first team despite missing the final 15 games on Cal Poly’s schedule.

He started 42 games as a true freshman at second base and was the Mustangs’ top hitter at .375 and also led the team in doubles (15), home runs (9) and RBI (53) before a baserunner from San Francisco collided with Jensen while he was fielding a ground ball, breaking his clavicle, in a game May 2 at Baggett Stadium.

“This is a great accomplishment for Matt,” seventh-year Mustang head coach Larry Lee said following the announcement of the 2009 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American Team. “I would have liked to have seen what he would have accomplished in a full season. For a majority of the season, he was our leader in several categories and he was a player we looked for for a key hit.”

Jensen produced a 23-game hitting streak (third longest in Cal Poly Division I history) and went 35-for-89 (.393) during the streak with 24 RBI. The streak, which included six consecutive two-hit games, was snapped by UC Santa Barbara on April 24.

Jensen compiled 17 multiple-hit games and 13 multiple-RBI contests this season. He was 6-for-13 in the UC Irvine series, 7-for-13 in the Houston series, eight 8-for-12 in the Cal State Bakersfield series and 5-for-12 in the Pacific series with three double and two homers en route to Big West Player of the Week honors.

He reached base 16 times in 19 plate appearances in the four-game Cal State Bakersfield series.

Jensen was a four-year varsity letter winner and starter on the mound and in the infield at Clovis East High School. He earned third-team All-American honors after hitting .458 as a senior with six doubles, five triples, eight home runs, 21 RBIs and 36 runs scored. On the mound, he was 5-3 with a 2.29 ERA, striking out 55 batters in 52 innings.

Jensen, Cal Poly’s first freshman All-American since catcher Wes Dorrell was selected in 2007 (Dorrell and outfielder Luke Yoder also were named freshman All-Americans by Ping!Baseball in 2007), was drafted in the 11th round by the Seattle Mariners in June 2008, but chose to continue his baseball career with the Mustangs.

He has been extended an invitation to the 2009 USA Baseball National Team Trials, to be held at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C., from June 15-24.

Two Cal State Fullerton freshman were honored by the NCBWA -- Tyler Pill on the first team and Noe Ramirez on the second team -- both starting pitchers.

Florida first baseman Preston Tucker and Florida State left-handed starting pitcher Sean Gilmartin have been named the 2009 Pro-Line Athletic National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association’s Freshman Hitter and Pitcher of the Year recipients.

Cal Poly finished the 2009 season 37-21 and 14-10 for third place in the Big West. The Mustangs earned their first NCAA Division I regional playoff berth since elevating their athletics program to Division I prior to the 1995 season.

Cal Poly has produced five winning seasons in the last six years and exceeded the 30-win mark for the seventh time in 10 seasons, falling one victory shy of the school Division I record for wins in a season.
