SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Junior Adam Buschini, a starter at five different positions for Cal Poly in 2009, is the first Mustang selected in the 2009 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
Buschini, who started 19 games at first base, 16 at second base, seven at third, three in right field and one as a designated hitter, was selected in the fourth round Wednesday by the Philadelphia Phillies. He was the 137th overall selection.
Buschini was one of five Mustangs drafted Wednesday.
Junior shortstop Kyle Smith was chosen in the 14th round by the Cleveland Indians while senior right-hander Eric Massingham was selected by the Phillies in the 25th round. Senior southpaw Junior right-hander Kevin Castner was picked by the Texas Rangers in the 26th round while Jared Eskew went to the Florida Marlins in the 29th round.
The first three rounds of the draft, including two supplemental rounds following the first and third rounds, were conducted Tuesday in New York. Rounds four through 30 will be held Wednesday with the final 20 rounds scheduled for Thursday.
Despite a hand injury when hit by a pitch from Rice’s Ryan Berry on the opening weekend of the season, Buschini (6-2, 205, San Ramon, CA/California HS) hit a school Division I record .422 -- currently 19th in NCAA Division I -- with 18 doubles, a trio of triples and 11 home runs. A first-team All-Big West Conference selection, Buschini was 49-for-106 (.462) in his last 27 games of the season.
He hit a home run in each game of Cal Poly’s regular season-ending four-game homestand and ended the campaign with a 17-game hitting streak, going 5-for-8 in the Tempe Regional en route to a spot on the All-Tempe Regional Tournament Team.
Buschini recorded three four-hit games and eight three-hit games for a total of 25 multiple-hit games and 20 multiple-RBI contests, including five RBI against USC on March 31 when he drove in the go-ahead runs with a two-run single in the seventh inning.
Buschini finished No. 6 on Cal Poly’s all-time RBI list for a single season with 61 and No. 10 with both his 18 doubles and 11 home runs. He earned the team’s Ozzie Smith Most Valuable Player award last week and also was named to the 2009 All-Ping!Baseball Team as an honorable mention second baseman.
Smith, the 425th overall selection, hit .332 with 16 doubles, two triples and five home runs, driving in 41 runs for the Mustangs in 2009. A Brooks Wallace Award candidate, Smith had an eight-game hitting streak early in the season and hit safely in 37 of his last 46 games.
Smith (6-1, 190, Visalia, CA/Buchanan HS) was a second-team All-Big West and finished with 19 multiple-hit games and eight multiple-RBI contests. He was 4-for-5 with seven RBIs against San Jose State on March 24, his second career four-hit game as a Mustang, and was 6-for-12 in the Pacific and San Francisco series and 5-for-12 in the Cal State Fullerton series.
Smith hit .253 as a sophomore with nine doubles, one triple and a pair of home runs with 27 RBIs, producing a four-hit game against Fresno State. He missed 11 games with a wrist injury, but after offseason surgery, improved his batting average 79 points in 2009.
Smith started 55 of 56 games as a true freshman at shortstop in 2007 and hit .279 with 33 RBIs overall and .330 in Big West games.
Massingham, the 767th overall selection, compiled a 7-3 record and 3.07 ERA this spring, appearing in 25 games, all out of the bullpen. The Mizuno Pitcher of the Year candidate earned six saves.
Massingham (6-2, 200, Benicia, CA/De La Salle HS) garnered two wins with five scoreless innings in the Cal State Northridge series and also earned victories against Rice, San Jose State, UC Davis, Fresno State and San Francisco. He struck out 35 batters in 41 innings and opponents hit just .253.
Massingham was Cal Poly’s Friday night starter in 2008 and compiled a 2-5 record with a 5.86 ERA. One of his wins was against Washington on March 7 with a complete-game five-hitter, striking out a career-high six with no walks. Massingham also was the Mustangs’ Friday night starter for the last seven weeks of 2007 season and posted a 3-1 record and 4.17 ERA. He made nine relief appearances as a freshman in 2006, finishing with a 1-1 record and 3.78 ERA.
Castner (6-4, 220, Lafayette, CA/Acalanes HS) also was drafted by the Rangers a year ago in the 10th round, but did not pass the physical. He underwent minor elbow surgery during the offseason and returned to the Mustangs for his third season. He did not have a decision and finished with a 7.08 ERA with 22 strikeouts in 20.1 innings.
Castner was 1-2 with a 5.46 ERA as a sophomore in 2008, striking out 40 batters in 29.2 innings.
Eskew (6-1, 185, Bakersfield, CA/Liberty HS/Point Loma Nazarene) compiled a 6-2 record and 5.01 ERA with 57 strikeouts in 73.2 innings in his final season with the Mustangs. He was the Friday night starter at the beginning of the season but was moved into the bullpen prior to the start of Big West play.
Eskew, a transfer from Point Loma Nazarene, pitched 7.1 innings with a career-high nine strikeouts against Saint Mary’s on April 7 and also earned a three-inning save against UC Santa Barbara on April 26.
As a junior in 2008, Eskew became Cal Poly’s Saturday starter after providing strong performances in middle relief, including four scoreless innings against Washington, four more against UC Santa Barbara and 5.2 strong innings in relief for the win against Pacific. He also earned the win against No. 12 Cal State Fullerton, allowing one run and four hits in seven innings.
Eskew was 5-4 with a 4.11 ERA in 2008.
Buschini is the fifth Cal Poly baseball player to be chosen in the fourth round of the MLB Draft. Two former Mustangs were drafted in the first round, one in the second round and five in the third round, including third baseman Brent Morel and center fielder Logan Schafer a year ago.
Mustang catcher John Orton (California Angels, 1987) was the 25th overall selection (first round) while pitcher Garrett Olson (Baltimore Orioles, 2005) was the 48th pick (compensatory round). Infielder Dave Oliver (Cleveland Indians, 1977) was the 53rd overall selection (third round).
Outfielder Grant Desme is fourth on the list of Mustang players drafted, chosen by the Oakland Athletics in the second round (74th overall pick) in 2007, while shortstop Ozzie Smith (San Diego Padres, 1977) was the 86th overall pick (fourth round) and is tied for fifth on the list with Morel (Chicago White Sox). Schafer (Milwaukee Brewers) was the 94th overall pick in 2008.
In terms of rounds, first-rounders Orton and Olson top the list, followed by second-rounder Desme. Five Mustangs have been chosen in the third round -- Morel, Schafer, Oliver, pitcher Gary Daley (third round, 106th overall pick, St. Louis Cardinals, 2006) and relief pitcher Evan Reed (third round (110th overall pick, Texas Rangers, 2007).
With the Buschini pick Wednesday, Cal Poly has had 14 players selected in the first 10 rounds of the last six drafts (2004-09) and a total of 22 players drafted overall. Three other Mustangs signed free-agent contracts with Major League organizations and three more signed deals with independent league teams.
