SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. -- Former Cal Poly relief pitcher Casey Fien pitched 2 1/3 scoreless, hitless innings in his Major League debut Sunday night for the Detroit Tigers.

Fien, who pitched for the Mustangs in 2005 and 2006, is the 11th former Cal Poly player to compete in a Major League game.

Three ex-Mustangs are currently on Major League rosters. In addition to Fien, the others are right-handed pitcher Kevin Correia with the San Diego Padres and southpaw pitcher Garrett Olson with the Seattle Mariners.

Fien entered Sunday's nationally televised game (ESPN) with two outs and the bases loaded in the seventh inning and induced Paul Konerko of the Chicago White Sox to hit a foul pop up to third base, ending the frame.

Fien gave up a leadoff walk in the eighth inning but retired the final five White Sox batters of the game. He finished with two strikeouts, throwing 29 pitches, including 17 strikes.

Chicago won the game, 5-1.

In two seasons at Cal Poly, Fien compiled a 6-5 record and 4.39 ERA with 71 strikeouts in 116 innings. He also earned three saves.

Fien was drafted by Detroit in the 20th round of the 2006 MLB Draft. He pitched for the Oneonta Tigers of the rookie New York-Penn League in 2006, the West Michigan Whitecaps of the Single-A Midwest League in 2007 and started the 2008 campaign with the Erie Seawolves of the Double-A Eastern League before being promoted to Triple-A Toledo of the International League.

With the Mudhens this year, Fien is 2-1 with a 3.61 ERA and eight saves, striking out 51 batters and walking only 13 in 47.1 innings. His contract with Toledo was purchased by the Tigers on Saturday.

Fien, from Buena Park, Calif., is a 2002 graduate of Kennedy High School in Anaheim and played one season at William Penn College in 2003 at Oskaloosa, Iowa, and one more (2004) at Golden West College in Huntington Beach, Calif., before transferring to Cal Poly for the 2005 and 2006 seasons.
