SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Senior reliever Mark DeVincenzi pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings in relief for his second save and sophomore left fielder Bobby Crocker knocked in three runs to lead Cal Poly to a 6-5 victory over California in the final game of a three-game non-conference weekend baseball series Sunday afternoon before 1,126 in Baggett Stadium.
In salvaging one win in the series, Cal Poly snapped a five-game losing streak and improved to 7-11 on the year. Cal, 11-9 and 14-2 winners in the first two games of the season, fell to 11-7 with Sunday’s loss.
Mustang starter DJ Mauldin (2-0) worked 5 1/3 innings on the mound for the win. He allowed just one run and four hits in the first five innings before tiring in the sixth and surrendering four runs on four hits. Mauldin walked two and struck out one.
DeVincenzi worked out of the jam in the sixth, allowed one hit in the seventh and retired the Golden Bears in order in each of the final two frames for the save. DeVincenzi struck out two.
Crocker lifted his batting average to .313 by going 3-for-5 in the game. His two-run single in the second inning capped a three-run rally and his RBI single in the fourth gave Cal Poly a 5-1 lead.
Senior designated hitter Luke Yoder drew a bases-loaded walk in the second inning prior to Crocker’s two-run single. Freshman third baseman Evan Busby singled to knock in a run in the fourth and senior first baseman David Van Ostrand singled up the middle to cash in Cal Poly’s final run of the game in the fifth.
The Mustangs’ 6-1 advantage didn’t last long, however, as Cal erupted for four runs in the sixth. Third baseman Tony Renda doubled to drive in two and shortstop Marcus Semien homered to left for two more runs, cutting Cal Poly’s lead to 6-5.
But the Mustangs held on and now are 6-1 in games in which they led after six innings, 7-1 when leading after seven and 7-0 when leading after eight frames.
Junior shortstop J.J. Thompson added two hits as Cal Poly outhit Cal 10-9. Freshman right fielder Mitch Haniger extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a first-inning single.
Cal was led offensively by designated hitter Austin Booker, first baseman Mark Canha, catcher Chadd Krist and Renda, each with two hits.
The loss went to Golden Bear starter Matt Evanoff (0-1), who gave up three runs and four hits in two innings with two walks and no strikeouts.
Cal Poly, which won 11 of 14 weekend series a year ago en route to its first Division I regional playoff berth, has yet to win a weekend series in five tries this season. The Mustangs were 1-2 against USC and USF, 1-2 at the Coca-Cola Classic in Surprise, Ariz., 0-3 against Houston and 1-2 against Cal.
Cal Poly’s 18-game start at 7-11 is its worst in 10 years when the 2000 squad opened the year 5-13. That team finished 32-24.
The Mustangs hit only .275 in the three-game series against Cal, led by Crocker at 5-for-13 with a double and eight RBI. Thompson and sophomore second baseman Matt Jensen both went 3-for-8 while Yoder was 4-for-12 and Busby 3-for-6. Jensen has hit in eight straight games.
Cal Poly will host Fresno State (10-10) for a single non-conference game Tuesday night at 6 in Baggett Stadium.
