SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Cal Poly head football coach Tim Walsh has too many quarterbacks and not enough cornerbacks.

Six Mustang signal callers took snaps during a 30-play scrimmage Saturday morning on the upper artificial-turf field of the Cal Poly Sports Complex.

“This scrimmage helps us find out exactly where those guys fit,” said Walsh, “especially for some of them to go against first-, second- and third-string defenses. We tried to give the quarterbacks an equal opportunity.”

At the same time, the Mustang defensive coaches were looking for replacements in the secondary decimated by injuries to starting cornerbacks Asa Jackson and Bijon Samoodi plus backup Brandon Williamson.

Nico Molino, a transfer from Northern Arizona, and Angel Morales, a converted linebacker, filled in at cornerback along with converted fullback Bismark Navarro and former wide receivers Ryan Taylor and John Yessner.

“The scrimmage gives those guys an opportunity to better appreciate how things work back there,” said Walsh.

Jackson fractured a wrist, Williamson broke his collarbone and Samoodi tore a hamstring, all in individual drills earlier this week.

Offensively, sophomore Andre Broadous engineered the first drive in the scrimmage and moved the offense 40 yards down the field with a pair of option keepers, a 15-yard pass to fullback Jordan Yocum and rushes of five or more yards by Yocum and freshman slotback Fred Gaines.

Returning starter Tony Smith didn’t fare as well on the second series while sophomore Doug Shumway ripped off runs of 15 and five yards before an incomplete pass and sack stalled the third drive of the series.

Broadous returned for the fourth series and carried the ball three times while Blake Page and Gabriel Umoh also turned in some nice runs.

Redshirt freshmen Vince Moraga, Ken Johnston and Duke deLancellotti also called plays in the scrimmage.

While numerous athletes played out of position due to injuries to others, the scrimmage was fruitful, Walsh said.

“We want to stay as healthy as we can, but we also want to get better,” Walsh said. “That’s the purpose of spring ball and many of the guys got better today.”

The scrimmage was witnessed by over 100 high school football coaches participating in a two-day clinic.

The Mustangs have completed seven practice sessions, with eight more scheduled over the next two weeks, including the Green vs. Gold Spring Game on Saturday, April 24, at 1 p.m. in Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
