SAN LUIS OBISPO – The Cal Poly Athletics Department and Mustang men’s soccer team recently finalized the program’s 2009 promotions schedule for home matches at Alex G. Spanos Stadium. The slate of events is scheduled to run the length of the regular season and covers all nine home matches.
Cal Poly, which last season finished third among Division I attendance leaders after averaging 2,839 supporters per home match, will allow fans age 13 and under a free sneak preview of the 2009 Mustangs on Wednesday, Aug. 26, as the program hosts San Diego State for a 7 p.m. exhibition tuneup. Youth supporters will also be able to attend a post-match autograph session with Cal Poly players and coaching staff in the adjacent Mustang Memorial Plaza .
Six days later, the first 2,000 supporters who flock to Spanos Stadium for Cal Poly’s 7 p.m. regular season-opening match against UNLV will receive limited edition schedule posters.
Following a three-match roadtrip, Cal Poly returns to Spanos Stadium Friday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. to face Sacramento State. The initial 1,000 Cal Poly students attending the Week of Welcome match will receive Mustang soccer gear, including t-shirts and flags. The homestand continues Sunday at 1 p.m. against San Jose State, as the Mustang program hosts Central Coast Youth Coaches Day. Attending coaches will receive the opportunity to participate in Cal Poly’s pre-match routine, including an insider’s look into the locker room with analysis from the Mustang coaching staff. With space limited, prospective coaches are required to register for the event with fourth-year head coach Paul Holocher at pholoche@calpoly.edu, or by phoning (805) 756-7070.
The first 500 youth fans attending Cal Poly’s Big West Conference home opener against UC Davis Sunday, Oct. 4 at 1 p.m. will receive Mustang soccer flags. The program will host its second-annual Mustang Soccer Scarf Night Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. against Cal State Fullerton. The first 250 fans in attendance will receive Mustang soccer scarves (limit two per family).
The Breakfast of Champions Match kicks off at 11 a.m. versus Cal State Northridge Saturday, Oct. 24. The first 250 students attending will receive a free Mustang soccer t-shirt. Four days later against UC Riverside at 7 p.m., the initial 500 fans will receive Mustang soccer “Believe” stickers.
The regular season and promotions schedule concludes Wednesday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m. against UC Santa Barbara. The first 2,000 fans through the Spanos Stadium turnstiles for the renewal of the Central Coast derby will receive Mustang soccer gear, including scarves and flags. Senior night festivities will take place prior to the match. Last season, 11,075 spectators – the third-largest crowd figure in NCAA Division I history – crammed Spanos Stadium for the Cal Poly-UC Santa Barbara fixture.
