BAKERSFIELD – Four of the Cal Poly men’s soccer team’s six shot attempts were on target Saturday evening, but the Mustangs failed to land a decisive strike and completed the non-conference portion of the 2009 campaign with 0-0, double-overtime draw versus Cal State Bakersfield at the Roadrunners’ Main Soccer Field.
Cal Poly freshman goalkeeper Brett Finkelstein was handed his first start since Sept. 27 and rewarded fifth-year head coach Paul Holocher by recording seven saves and his second collegiate clean sheet. The draw was Cal Poly’s first since deadlocking UC Santa Barbara, 2-2, during the semifinals of the 2008 Big West Tournament – a span of 14 matches.
Cal Poly (4-7-1) enjoyed a pair of chances to win the match late in regulation, but Cal State Bakersfield goalkeeper Erik Shannon saved an attempt from sophomore midfielder Jacob Hustedt (above) before punching a header from senior Daniel Cumming over the crossbar.
The Mustangs also earned a free kick just seconds from full time, but junior midfielder Junior Burgos’ shot was again punched away by Shannon.
“I felt like the team played tough considering this was our third match of the week and the bodies were tired,” Holocher said. “The guys were strong enough to earn the shutout against a good Cal State Bakersfield team and now our focus shifts to Big West play.”
Cal Poly returns to Alex G. Spanos Stadium to host Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. Junior forward David Zamora’s match-winning header allowed Cal Poly to open Big West Conference play with a 1-0 victory at Cal State Fullerton Sept. 30.
