SAN LUIS OBISPO – After producing the Mustang men’s soccer team’s first hat trick in nearly four seasons and tying a program record with three goals in Cal Poly’s 3-2 edging of Cal State Fullerton on Oct. 14, junior midfielder Junior Burgos was named Big West Conference Player of the Week Monday morning.
Burgos entered Cal Poly’s clash with the Titans having scored just one goal in six previous matches, but doubled his season tally in the fifth minute by whipping a 30-yard free kick past Cal State Fullerton goalkeeper Trevor Whiddon.
Burgos, who hit the right post in the 10th minute with one of his five shot attempts, converted a penalty in the 19th before receiving a feed through the box from junior forward David Zamora and firing past Whiddon into the right corner of the net in the 26th. With his treble, Burgos became the first Mustang to score thrice since Marcus Griffin notched three against Cal State Fullerton Nov. 9, 2006.
Burgos also recorded two shots in Cal Poly’s 1-0 victory at UC Riverside Oct. 17.
Monday’s award was the first such honor for Burgos and second for a Mustang this season after junior goalkeeper Patrick McLain earned praise Oct. 5.
Co-Big West Conference-leading Cal Poly (6-7-1, 4-1-0) returns to the pitch at UC Irvine Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. Only the 2007 Mustangs, who earned 13 points from their initial five conference matches, have posted a better start to a Big West campaign.
