SAN LUIS OBISPO – After producing the Cal Poly men’s soccer team’s second three-goal match in a span of 10 days, matching the Mustang program record for single-match goals and recording his first collegiate hat trick, junior forward David Zamora was named Big West Conference Player of the Week Monday afternoon.

Zamora entered Cal Poly’s Oct. 24 home clash against Cal State Northridge with just three goals in 15 matches this season, but broke a scoreless stalemate versus the Matadors with a 68th-minute header following a pass from freshman midfielder Chris Gaschen. Two minutes later, Zamora converted his second penalty attempt of the season. Zamora rounded off his seven-minute hat trick in the 74th as he corralled a rebounded shot attempt off of Matadors goalkeeper Michael Abalos and rammed the errant ball into the back of the net.

All four of Zamora’s shot attempts in the 3-1 victory versus Cal State Northridge were on target. With the seventh hat trick in Mustang history and second this year after junior midfielder Junior Burgos hit Cal State Fullerton for three strikes on Oct. 19, Zamora moved into second place on the Cal Poly career goals chart with 20. He also ranks third in program history with 45 points.

Monday’s award was the second of Zamora’s career after earning initial honors on Oct. 15, 2007. Zamora is also the third Mustang to earn Player of the Week accolades this year following Burgos (Oct. 19) and junior goalkeeper Patrick McLain (Oct. 5).

Big West-leading Cal Poly (7-8-1, 5-2-0) hosts cellar-dwelling UC Riverside (1-12-1, 0-5-1) Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. inside Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
