UCLA, UC Irvine Win VS Athletics/Cal Poly Invite
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Both Cal Poly cross country teams placed second on Saturday at the VS Athletics/Cal Poly Invitational at the Fairbanks Cross Country Course in San Luis Obispo with UCLA winning the women’s race and UC Irvine winning the men’s. SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Both Cal Poly cross country teams placed second on Saturday at the VS Athletics/Cal Poly Invitational at the Fairbanks Cross Country Course in San Luis Obispo with UCLA winning the women’s race and UC Irvine winning the men’s.
UCLA’s Shannon Murakami was the overall winner of the women’s race with a time of 18:01 as the Bruins packed together runners in the four, five and six positions to help take home the win.
The Bruins won the meet with a team score of 31 points followed closely by the Mustangs with 37 and UC Irvine in third with 68 points.
UC Irvine won the men’s race with 29 points with Cal Poly running a split squad in second (39 points), followed by UCLA with 60 points. Former Cal Poly All-American Phillip Reid was the overall winner, covering the 8k course in a time of 26:42.
Freshman Kayleigh Tyerman paced the Cal Poly women’s team with a second place finish, covering the 5k course in a time of 18:08. Transfer sophomore Vanessa Hancock was fourth overall with a time of 18:40.
Rebecca Paddack was the third Mustang to cross the line in a time of 18:56 in 10th place. Brienna Morris followed closely behind in 11th and a time of 19:01.
Lauren Matthews was 15th with a time of 19:18 followed by Courtney Kostrikin in 18th (19:24) and Noelle Garcia in 19th (19:31).
The Cal Poly men’s team was led by Derek Thomas with a time of 26:54 and a second place finish. He was the No. 1 collegiate runner followed by Rex Nelson of UC Irvine (27:05).
Michael Johnson was the second Mustang to cross the line in fourth and a time of 27:10.
The next Cal Poly runner was Clayton Graham in 16th with a time of 28:13 followed by Michael Machado in 17th with the same time.
Ryan Cosens was 20th (28:16) followed by Doug Bettisworth in 27th and a time of 28:51.
The Cal Poly teams will return to action on Oct. 31 at the Big West Conference Championships hosted by UC Riverside.
