SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The Cal Poly women’s soccer team picked up its fourth win in a row with a 3-0 shutout over Arizona on Sunday at Alex G. Spanos Stadium in the team’s final tune-up before opening Big West Conference play next week. With the win the Mustangs improve to 6-4-0 overall while Arizona falls to 3-6-1.

The Mustangs first goal came just five minutes into the game (5:25) when Morgan Miller dribbled the ball near the right side of the net drawing out Arizona goalie Devon Wharf. Miller made a quick pass to Tiffany Gummow on the left for an open net goal. For Gummow it was her first goal of the season.

The Mustangs second goal came in the 28th minute when Julianne Grinstead put a header into the back of the net off a corner kick by Kristina Condon-Sherwood. For Ginstead it was her first goal of the season.

The Mustangs held a 2-0 lead at the half, scoring two goals on just three shots while Arizona took seven shots with two on goal.

The Mustangs rounded out the scoring when CiCi Kobinski scored her second goal of the season when she took a feed from Monica Hemenez from midfield. Kobinski split two defenders and fired her shot off an Arizona defender right in front of the goal.

Cal Poly goalie Coral Hoover earned her fourth shutout in a row making three saves to improve to 6-1-0 for the season. Hoover made a diving save midway through the second half from point blank range to preserve the shutout.

Arizona had another scoring opportunity in the 55th minute when Cal Poly committed a foul just out side the edge of the penalty box. The ensuing shot by Leila Amini went wide.

Wharf, in goal for the Cats, took the loss allowing two goals and making two saves.

The Wildcats outshot the Mustangs 9-6 and held a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks. The Mustangs were whistled for 11 fouls compared to Arizona’s eight.

Four yellow cards were issued, three to Arizona (Samantha Drees, Jasmine Namdar and Analisa Marquez) and one to the Mustangs (Carissa Voegele).

The Mustangs return to action on Friday, Oct. 2, when the team opens Big West Conference play on the road at Cal State Northridge.
