Mustangs Shutout UC Riverside, 2-0

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Two first half goals and another shutout by goalie Coral Hoover was all the Mustangs needed as the Cal Poly women’s soccer team defeated UC Riverside 2-0 in a Big West Conference game on Friday at Alex G. Spanos Stadium. With the win the Mustangs improve to 8-5-0 and 2-1 in conference play while UCR falls to 5-5-3 and 0-2 in BWC play.

The Mustangs got on the board early at the 12 minute mark when Julianne Grinstead headed the ball in off a corner kick by Kristina Condon-Sherwood. For Grinstead it was her third goal of the season as she put the ball into the right side of the net.

Cal Poly added its second goal of the half in the 42nd minute when Tiffany Gummow played the ball up the left side of the field, beating two UCR defenders. Gummow placed a perfect ball over the outstretched hand of UCR goalie Jessica White from 20 yards out into the upper right corner of the net.

UC Riverside had only two scoring opportunities in the half, one came in the third minute when Heidi Gassaway put a shot on goal. In the 18th minute, Kayla Troesh fired a shot from eight yards out, but was stopped by Hoover.

In the half the Mustangs took six shots with five on goal while UCR had four shots, two on goal.

The Mustang defense became stingy in the second half, not allowing a shot on goal and just two in the half.

Overall the Mustangs had 16 shots compared to six for the Highlanders with 10 on goal the Mustangs and just two for UCR.

Both teams had six corner kicks while UC Riverside as whistled for 10 fouls compared to four against Cal Poly.

Hoover earned her eighth win in goal for the Mustangs and her fifth shutout while recording two saves. Jessica White made eight saves for UCR in the loss.

The Mustangs return to the field on Sunday when the team will host Cal State Fullerton for a Big West Conference game at 1 pm in Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
