This Week: The Mustangs remain at home for a pair of Big West Conference games this week after picking up a pair of wins this past weekend. This Week: The Mustangs remain at home for a pair of Big West Conference games this week after picking up a pair of wins this past weekend. The Mustangs defeated UC Riverside 2-1 on Friday and came back to shutout Cal State Fullerton 1-0 on Sunday to improve to 3-1-0 in conference play and 9-5 -0 overall. This week Cal Poly will host UC Davis on Wednesday, Oct 15 and Long Beach State on Sunday, Oct. 18. The Aggies enter the game with the Mustangs with a 6-5-1 overall record and are 1-2-0 in conference play while Long Beach State is 5-6-2 and 1-1.
Upcoming: Following the game with the 49ers on Sunday, Oct. 18. The Mustangs will hit the road for the team’s final two Big West Conference regular season games. Cal Poly will travel to Pacific on Oct. 23 and UC Santa Barbara on Nov. 1. Pacific is currently 8-4-2 overall and 2-1 while the Gauchos are 6-7-1 and 3-1 in conference play.

UC Davis: The Aggies enter the game with the Mustangs with a 6-5-1 overall record and post a 1-2-0 mark in BWC play. The team split contests this past week falling at Northrige 1-0 in overtime while defeating UC Irvine 2-1. Rochelle VanBuskirk leads the team with 12 goals this season and has added four assists... Marisa Boge chips in with six goals and four assists. The two have combined to scored nearly 70 percent of the team’s goals this season. Sarah Peters has started 12 games in goal for the Aggies and posts a 1.15 GAA and a .741 save percentage. MaryClaire Robinson is in her 18th year as head coach of the Aggies and has amassed a 163-125-24 record.
Some History with the Aggies: The Mustangs hold a 5-1-1 advantage over UC Davis in the all-time series including last season’s 1-0 loss in Davis last year.
Last Time Against the Aggies: (Oct. 26, 2008) DAVIS, Calif. – Cal Poly took 15 shots but put only two on goal, both in the first half, and UC Davis made a first-half goal stand up as the Aggies upset the Mustangs, 1-0, Sunday afternoon before 388 fans at Aggie Soccer Stadium. The game was a defensive battle early, as neither team had a shot on goal until Mustang senior Meggie O’Hagan had an attempt stopped by Aggie goalkeeper Sarah Peters in the 21st minute. Cal Poly was rewarded a corner kick moments later and sophomore Morgan Miller got a shot away but pushed it wide. UC Davis didn’t record its first shot until the 30th minute as freshman Lisa Kemp put a try wide. Moments later the Aggies regained possession and Kemp found junior Marisa Boge, who beat goalkeeper Coral Hoover to the right corner for her team-leading fourth goal of the season to give UC Davis a 1-0 lead. Boge’s score would be the only shot on goal for UC Davis in the half, being out-shot overall 9-3, but the Aggies would take the 1-0 lead into halftime. Cal Poly out-shot UC Davis 15-9 for the game, but the Aggies put four shots on goal while the Mustangs only hit the Davis goal twice. Cal Poly also had an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks but couldn’t take advantage. Peters recorded her fourth shutout of the season while Hoover made three saves in the loss.
Long Beach State : The 49ers enter the week with a 5-6-2 overall record and a 1-1 mark in conference play after playing two draws in non-conference games this past week. LBSU played No. 25 San Diego to a 0-0 draw and did the same on Sunday with Bakersfield. Shawna Gordon leads the team with four goals and four assists followed by Lindsay Bullock and Nicole Hubbard with three goals each. Emily Kingsborough has made the last two starts in net for the 49ers and posts a 2-2-2 overall record. She has a 1.12 GAA and a .767 save percentage. Mauricio Ingrassia is in his sixth year as the head coach of the 49ers and has a 59-31-11 overall record.

Last Time Against the 49ers: (Nov. 2, 2008) SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – On Senior Day, upperclassmen Ashley Vallis and Leah Morales scored for Cal Poly but Long Beach State hung on for a 3-2 victory before 1, 107 fans at Alex G Spanos Stadium. The Mustangs came out sharp on Sunday, dominating play for the opening 15 minutes. Cal Poly had several good scoring chances and capitalized in the eighth minute. Junior Carrie Andrews sent a lead pass to Vallis from 40 yards out to left side of the box, and the Mustang’s leading scorer beat Long Beach State goalkeeper Liz Ramos to the bottom right corner to give Cal Poly a 1-0 lead. Long Beach State took over play for the remainder of the first half. In the 15th minute, senior Dana Farquhar sent a corner kick in front of the Mustang goal. Several players from both squads appeared to touch the ball, including Cal Poly goalkeeper Coral Hoover, but 49er senior Hayley Bolt got the last touch and headed the ball into the right side of the Mustang goal to tie the score. The 49ers would strike again in the 40th minute, with senior Kim Silos sending a long lead pass down to the right side of the box. Sophomore Kristen Keifer was able to receive the pass in stride for a breakaway and beat Hoover to the bottom left corner. Keifer’s eighth goal of the season gave Long Beach a 2-1 lead that remained the score into halftime. In the 68th minute, the 49ers added what proved to be the game-winning goal. Keifer moved past the Mustang defense and sent a cross from the left side of the box. The ball found sophomore Mariko Strickland, who got a foot on the ball and beat Hoover to the top left corner of the goal to give Long Beach a 3-1 lead. The Mustangs would make the game interesting in the 84th minute, however, as Morales took a free kick from 25 yards out above the left side of the box. The senior sent a bent a beautiful set piece into the bottom right corner of the net, connecting on her first goal of the season and cutting the Mustang deficit to 3-2. The 49ers out-shot Cal Poly 18-11 for the game including a 10-7 advantage in shots on goal. Silos led the 49ers with six shots and Bolt added three, while Vallis led Cal Poly with three shots. Ramos made five saves for the victory despite allowing more than one goal for the first time in conference play this season. Hoover made four saves on seven shots before coming out in the 76th minute and Gauvin made three saves in her second career game. Cal Poly committed a season-low three fouls in the game while Long Beach State was whistled eight times.
vs. UC Riverside (Oct. 9) SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Two first half goals and another shutout by goalie Coral Hoover was all the Mustangs needed as the Cal Poly women’s soccer team defeated UC Riverside 2-0 in a Big West Conference game on Friday at Alex G. Spanos Stadium. With the win the Mustangs improve to 8-5-0 and 2-1 in conference play while UCR falls to 5-5-3 and 0-2 in BWC play. The Mustangs got on the board early at the 12 minute mark when Julianne Grinstead headed the ball in off a corner kick by Kristina Condon-Sherwood. For Grinstead it was her third goal of the season as she put the ball into the right side of the net. Cal Poly added its second goal of the half in the 42nd minute when Tiffany Gummow played the ball up the left side of the field, beating two UCR defenders. Gummow placed a perfect ball over the outstretched hand of UCR goalie Jessica White from 20 yards out into the upper right corner of the net. UC Riverside had only two scoring opportunities in the half, one came in the third minute when Heidi Gassaway put a shot on goal. In the 18th minute, Kayla Troesh fired a shot from eight yards out, but was stopped by Hoover. In the half the Mustangs took six shots with five on goal while UCR had four shots, two on goal. The Mustang defense became stingy in the second half, not allowing a shot on goal and just two in the half. Overall the Mustangs had 16 shots compared to six for the Highlanders with 10 on goal the Mustangs and just two for UCR. Both teams had six corner kicks while UC Riverside as whistled for 10 fouls compared to four against Cal Poly. Hoover earned her eighth win in goal for the Mustangs and her fifth shutout while recording two saves. Jessica White made eight saves for UCR in the loss.
vs. Cal State Fullerton (Oct. 11) SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Morgan Miller’s third goal of the season in the 39th minute of play was all the Mustangs would need in defeating Cal State Fullerton 1-0 in a Big West Conference women’s soccer game on Sunday at Alex G. Spanos Stadium in San Luis Obispo. Miller’s goal came in the 39th minute when Afton Thulin beat a Cal State Fullerton defender about 30 yards out and fed the ball to Miller who caught the Titan goalie off line and fired the ball into the right-center of the net from 12 yards out. For Miller it was her third goal of the season. The Titans had two solid scoring chances in the first half with the first coming in the 27th minute off a corner kick. The ball was settled and CSF’s Jackie Hovda fired a pointblank shot at Coral Hoover who made the save. In the 32nd minute Stacey Fox tried to get the Titans on the board with a header that was gathered in by Hoover. Cal Poly had its chances to improve on the score in the 25th minute when Cici Kobinski fired a ball from 18 yards out only to have goalie Jordan Santos make a diving save deflecting the ball away. Miller had a chance to score a second goal when she played a header wide in the 36th minute. The half ended with the Mustangs holding a 1-0 lead. Cal Poly outshot the Titans 6-5 with three Mustang shots on goal compared to two for CSF. The second half saw the Mustangs take seven more shots while Fullerton managed four with the Mustangs having the best scoring chances coming in the 80th and 85th minute. Bianca Burright in the 80th minute played a header in front of the goal but was handled by Santos while in the 85th minute she fired a ball from 20 yards out off the top of the bar. CSF had an opportunity to tie the game in the closing minutes when off a corner kick the ball settled in front of the goal but was cleared by Hoover without a shot taken. Overall the Mustangs had 13 shots with seven on goal while CSF managed nine shots four on goal. Each team had five corner kicks while the Titans were whistled for nine fouls compared to seven for the Mustangs. Hoover earned her ninth win of the season in goal for the Mustangs and her sixth shutout when she tallied four saves. Santos took the loss for CSF with six saves.
Two More for Hoover: Senior goalie Coral Hoover chocked up two more shutouts this past weekend to give her six for the season.
Game Winner: Morgan Miller scored the game winner with her third goal of the season in the win over Cal State Fullerton on Sunday. For Miller it was her first game winning goal of the season.
Game Winner 2: Julianne Grinstead tallied her second gaol of the season when she knocked one in during the fourth minute of the second overtime to defeat UC Irvine. This past Friday, Grinstead scored her second game winning goal of the season when she heading in the winner over UC Riverside... it was her third goal of the season.

The Record: Last season the Mustangs posted a 10-9-1 overall record and were 5-3 in Big West contests... on home games, Cal Poly was a mediocre 4-5 in Alex G. Spanos Stadium, but was 6-2-1 on the road.... Neutral games the team was 0-2...

Hoover Repeats as BWC Player of the Week: Cal Poly senior goalie Coral Hoover was named the Big West Athlete of the Week when she recorded two shutouts for the second straight week. Hoover, from Corralitos, CA, recorded back-to-back shutouts in wins over No. 7 California and at home against Arizona. The senior goalie shutout the No. 7 Cal Bears in overtime, handing them their second loss of the season, recording nine saves in the game. She faced 25 shots, 10 in the first half and 15 in the second. The Bears entered the game averaging 2.8 goals per game. She backed it up on Sunday with her fourth-straight shutout with a 3-0 blanking of Arizona. In the game she made three saves. Hoover improved her overall record to 6-1 this season and dropped her GAA to .57 and improved her save percentage to .930. Cal Poly improved its overall record to 6-4 with Hoover in goal in all six wins.
Mustang Shots: Cal Poly has taken a total of 135 shots this season with 72 on goal... that’s 56 percent of the team’s shots on net... Opponents have taken 230 shots with 100 on goal... 44 percent.
Breakdown by Class: On the Mustangs 2009 roster their are six seniors listed.... five juniors and eight sophomores... but the big number falls on the freshman ...15....
Hoover, Top Drawer POW: Coral Hoover was named Top Drawer Soccer.com’s female player of the week for her two shutout victories over Pac-10 schools. “Hoover earned a pair of shutout wins as the Mustangs surprised a pair of PAC 10 opponents, including previous top 5 side California.“
Crozier Reaches 200: With the Mustangs 1-0 defeat of Cal State Northridge on October 12, 2008, head coach Alex Crozier was successful in his first attempt at reaching the 200-win plateau. Now in his 18th season, Crozier is the all-time coaching wins leader in Big West Women’s Soccer history and has been named the conference’s Coach of the Year four times. He also became just the 32nd coach in NCAA women’s soccer history to reach 200 wins (minimum 10 years coaching at Division-I). Entering Friday’s opener, Crozier’s record stands at 202-105-34.
Preseason Big West Polls: The Cal Poly women’s soccer team has been selected by the Big West Conference coaches to finish third in the 2009 standings. The Mustangs earned 65 points and a first-place nod. Coach Alex Crozier’s Mustangs finished 10-9-1 overall and in third place in Big West play in 2008. Cal Poly also welcomes back a quartet of all-conference honorable mention members in Morgan Miller, Kristina Condon-Sherwood, Carissa Voegele and Coral Hoover. The UC Santa Barbara women’s soccer team was selected to win the 2009 Big West championship in a vote of the nine coaches. The Gauchos claimed five first-place votes and 75 points to capture the favorite’s role. Three-time defending Big West regular season champion Long Beach State accumulated 67 points for second place. The 49ers received two first-place tallies. After Cal Poly was Pacific with 53 points and one first-place vote. Cal State Northridge followed in fifth with 33 points and Cal State Fullerton was sixth (32). Rounding out the poll were UC Irvine with 31 points, UC Davis with 28 and UC Riverside with 21.
