Mustangs Travel to Pacific for BWC Game

This Week: The Mustangs hit the road this week after the conclusion of the team’s Big West Conference regular season home schedule this past week. Cal Poly will travel to Stockton to take on Pacific after defeating UC Davis and Long Beach State by scores of 1-0 in both games. With two conference games remaining the Mustangs sit atop of the BWC standings with 15 points and a 5-1 conference record and a 11-5-0 mark overall. Pacific enters the game with the Mustangs with 9 points with a 3-1-0 BWC record and 9-4-2 overall. Including the game with the Mustangs, Pacific has four conference games remaining while Cal Poly has two.
Upcoming: Following the game with the Following the game with the Tigers on Friday, Cal Poly will not return to the field until Sunday, Nov. 1 when the team travels to Central Coast Rival UC Santa Barbara. UCSB enters the week with 12 points and a 4-1-0 record in conference games and are 7-8-1 overall. UCSB has three conference games remaining and will travel to UC Davis on Oct. 23 and Pacific on Oct. 25 before returning home to host Cal Poly.

Pacific: The Tigers enter the game with the Mustangs with a 3-1-0 record in conference games and are 9-4-2 overall. In the team’s last game, on the road at UC Davis, a goal in the last minute of play proved to be the game winner in the 2-1 win over the Aggies. Alex Topp placed the ball with a header off a free kick into the back of the net with 34 seconds left to play. Overall the Tigers look to two players for their offensive push, Maricela Padilla with 18 points coming on eight goals and two assists while Angelica Figueroa also has 18 points coming on five goals and eight assists. Two other payers have scored three goals this season, Kristina Wavomba and Alex Topp. Jill Medigovich has started every game in goal for the Tigers and posts a 0.87 GAA and a .780 save percentage. Head coach Keith Coleman is in his 16th season at the helm of the Tigers and entering the season had amassed 138-118-29 record and is a ‘91 graduate of Cal Poly.
Some History with the Tigers: The Mustangs hold a 12-2-1 advantage over Pacific in the all-time series including last season’s 2-0 win.
Last Time Against the Tigers: (Oct. 24, 2008) STOCKTON, Calif. – Senior Meggie O’Hagan and freshman Tiffany Gummow scored for Cal Poly and junior Coral Hoover made seven saves as the Cal Poly defeated Pacific, 2-0. The Mustangs out-shot Pacific 8-5 in the first half but the Tiger’s had the game’s first good scoring chance in the 24th minute. Sophomore Natalie Wong had a shot slip by Hoover and roll along the goal line, but the Mustang defense was able to clear it out of harms way just before it crossed the line for a goal. In the 41st minute it was Cal Poly who got the game’s first tally. A Cal Poly free kick was played into the box, and O’Hagan managed to get a head on the ball. The shot deflected off a couple Pacific players and ended up in the net, giving O’Hagan her second goal of the season and the Mustangs a 1-0 lead into halftime. The Mustangs reversed field after a Pacific attack was thwarted, and freshman Afton Thulin sent a long pass from the right side towards the Tiger’s left post. Gummow was there to finish, netting her fourth goal of the season to tie for the team lead and staking Cal Poly to a 2-0 lead which would hold up for the final ten minutes of regulation. Cal Poly out-shot Pacific 16-15 for the game but the Tigers had a 10-8 advantage in the second half as they looked to even the score. O’Hagan led Cal Poly with three shots, all on goal, while freshman Kristina Wavomba sophomore Kim Hargrave each took three shots for Pacific. Hoover made five saves in the second half to insure her third career shutout while the Tiger’s Amanda McNab made six saves in the defeat.
vs UC Davis : SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Freshman Cici Kobinski’s team-leading fourth goal of the season led the Cal Poly women’s soccer team to a 1-0 win over UC Davis in a Big West Conference game at Alex G. Spanos Stadium on Thursday in San Luis Obispo. Cal Poly’s lone goal came in the 19th minute when Cal Poly forward Bianca Burright flipped a pass from about 40 yards out to Kobinski who beat a UCD defender, Katie Webb, to the ball near the top of the box and fired a shot into the right side of the net. UC Davis had a solid scoring opportunity in the first half when Webb took a free kick after a Cal Poly foul from 25 yards out, but the shot was blocked by a Cal Poly defender. At the mid-point of the game Cal Poly had taken four shots, all on goal while UCD had six shots, three on goal. In the opening moments of the second half, UC Davis had two attempts to tie the game, but were denied both times by Cal Poly goalie Coral Hoover. In the 51st minute, UCD’s Marisa Boge fired a shot from eight yards out forcing Hoover to make a diving save. Thirty seconds later Boge had a second try but Hoover took the ball off her foot for the save. The Cal Poly defense tightened up and limited the Aggie attack the rest of the game Hoover earned her seventh shutout of the season when she made seven saves and improved her record in goal to 10-2-0 while UCD goalie Sarah Peters also made seven saves in the loss. Cal Poly had a total of 14 shots, eight on goal while Davis had 14 shots, seven on goal. Kaleena Andruss and Burright led the Mustangs with three shots each while Boge led the Aggies with five shots, four on goal. The Mustangs had six corners compared to just two for Davis while Cal Poly was whistled for seven fouls compared to five for UCD.
vs. Long Beach State : SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – A goal by sophomore Tiffany Gummow in the 47th minute of play gave Cal Poly a 1-0 win over Long Beach State in a hotly contested battle between the two women’s soccer programs in a Big West Conference game at Alex G. Spanos Stadium on Sunday. Gummow’s game winner, her fourth goal of the season, came when she dribbled the ball down the left side of the field, beating two LBSU defenders. The shot squeezed between the far post and deflected off the goalie and into the net. The goal by Gummow may have been the decider, but a play in the 73rd minute created the drama. Off a Long Beach State corner kick by Karina Camacho, 49er Lindsay Bullock headed the ball toward the Cal Poly goal while Coral Hoover, the Mustang goalie, deflected the ball toward the post and off a Cal Poly defender for an apparent save. Long Beach State claimed a goal while Cal Poly claimed the save. A discussion of over four minutes by the officials resulted in a no goal call and the officials put the ball back in play with a drop ball 10 yards in front of the Cal Poly goal. The resulting play saw the ball played out of bounds. Long Beach State had another opportunity for a goal in the 50th minute when Camacho settled a ball off a pass from Nadia Link, and fired a shot from 10 yards out with Hoover making a diving save. The scoreless first half saw the Mustangs take just three shots, two on goal compared to six by the 49ers with two on goal. The Mustangs best scoring opportunity came in the 30th minute when Kristina Condon-Sherwood was awarded a free kick from 30 yards out. She bent it around the wall, but LBSU goalie Emily Kingsborough was there for the stop. The 49ers had a opportunity in the 38th minute on a cross from the left side by Karina Camacho, but Hoover was able to punch the ball out of the box. Overall LBSU outshot Cal Poly 15-8 with six shots on goal compared to the Mustangs four. Hoover earned her eighth shutout of the season making six saves in the game. Kingsborough took the loss for the 49ers, making three saves.
Hoover Wins Third BWC Award: The senior goalie recorded two shutouts this past week in leading the team to two conference wins. In the 1-0 over UC Davis, Hoover faced back-to-back attempts to tie the game in the 51st min. Hoover made one diving save to her side, then 30 seconds later faced a point-blank shot that she dove to take it off the foot of the offensive player. Against LBSU Hoover made multiple saves at critical times. Hoover improved her overall record to 11-2 this season and dropped her GAA to .68 and improved her save percentage to .907. Cal Poly improved its overall record to 11-5-0 with Hoover in goal in all wins. For Hoover it was her seventh and eighth shutout of the season. Coral Hoover earned her second POW when she recorded two shutouts for the second straight week. Hoover, from Corralitos, CA, recorded back-to-back shutouts in wins over No. 7 California and at home against Arizona. The senior goalie shutout the No. 7 Cal Bears in overtime, handing them their second loss of the season, recording nine saves in the game. She faced 25 shots, 10 in the first half and 15 in the second. The Bears entered the game averaging 2.8 goals per game. She backed it up on Sunday with her fourth-straight shutout with a 3-0 blanking of Arizona. In the game she made three saves. Hoover improved her overall record to 6-1 this season and dropped her GAA to .57 and improved her save percentage to .930. Cal Poly improved its overall record to 6-4 with Hoover in goal in all six wins.
Four in a Row.... Twice: For Coral Hoover she has now record four shutouts in a row twice this season... The most recent streak has included shutouts over Long Beach State (1-0), UC Davis (1-0), Cal State Fullerton (1-0) and UC Riverside (2-0)... while the first four came against Air Force (1-0), Colorado College (1-0), No. 7 California (1-0) and Arizona (3-0)....
Note: The last Cal Poly team to record four straight shutouts prior to this season was in 2003... when the team tallied six straight entering the NCAA Tournament and early in the same season, winning five in a row by shutout.
Hoover Now Sixth in the Nation: Coral Hoover has moved up to sixth in the national rankings with a .907 save percentage with her two shutouts this past week....
You Can Do it... So Can I.... : On Thursday night freshman Cici Kobinski became the team leader with her fourth goal of the season in the win over UC Davis.... Well.... Sophomore Tiffany Gummow matched her for the team lead when she scored the game winner over Long Beach State on Sunday... both lead the team with four goals this year...
Try to Figure this one out... : The Mustangs currently sit atop the Big West Conference with 15 points and a 5-1 record with just two games remaining... but hold the horses... UCSB, Cal Poly’s last opponent, is 4-1 with 12 points and has three games remaining (at UC Davis, at Pacific and Cal Poly)... Wait .. there is more... Pacific has just nine points, but has only one loss with a 3-1 record and have four games remaining (Cal Poly, UCSB, at UC Riverside and at CS Fullerton)... So... Cal Poly controls it’s destiny if they win out... but the game with Pacific looms huge while the game with UCSB speaks for its self... but don’t forget the teams with two losses... one of them beat Cal Poly... CS Northridge is 4-2 with two BWC games remainig; UCI and LBSU... UCI also has two losses (3-2-1) but Cal Poly defeated the Anteaters but they have three games remaining...
Sharing the Love: Cal Poly has scored 23 goals this season .... coming from 11 different players... Kobinski and Gummow lead the team with four while Morgan Miller, and Julianne Grinstead each have three... five players have one...
Mustang Shots: Cal Poly has taken 182 shots this season, putting 104 on goal... that’s at 57 percent while opponents have taken 274 shots and 119 have been on goal.. 43 percent.
Breakdown by Class: On the Mustangs 2009 roster their are six seniors listed.... five juniors and eight sophomores... but the big number falls on the freshman ...15....
Hoover, Top Drawer POW: Coral Hoover was named Top Drawer Soccer.com’s female player of the week for her two shutout victories over Pac-10 schools. “Hoover earned a pair of shutout wins as the Mustangs surprised a pair of PAC 10 opponents, including previous top 5 side California.“
Crozier Reaches 200: With the Mustangs 1-0 defeat of Cal State Northridge on October 12, 2008, head coach Alex Crozier was successful in his first attempt at reaching the 200-win plateau. Now in his 18th season, Crozier is the all-time coaching wins leader in Big West Women’s Soccer history and has been named the conference’s Coach of the Year four times. He also became just the 32nd coach in NCAA women’s soccer history to reach 200 wins (minimum 10 years coaching at Division-I). Entering Friday’s opener, Crozier’s record stands at 202-105-34.
Preseason Big West Polls: The Cal Poly women’s soccer team has been selected by the Big West Conference coaches to finish third in the 2009 standings. The Mustangs earned 65 points and a first-place nod. Coach Alex Crozier’s Mustangs finished 10-9-1 overall and in third place in Big West play in 2008. Cal Poly also welcomes back a quartet of all-conference honorable mention members in Morgan Miller, Kristina Condon-Sherwood, Carissa Voegele and Coral Hoover. The UC Santa Barbara women’s soccer team was selected to win the 2009 Big West championship in a vote of the nine coaches. The Gauchos claimed five first-place votes and 75 points to capture the favorite’s role. Three-time defending Big West regular season champion Long Beach State accumulated 67 points for second place. The 49ers received two first-place tallies. After Cal Poly was Pacific with 53 points and one first-place vote. Cal State Northridge followed in fifth with 33 points and Cal State Fullerton was sixth (32). Rounding out the poll were UC Irvine with 31 points, UC Davis with 28 and UC Riverside with 21.
