SAN LUIS OBISPO – Freshman lefthander Anna Cahn pitched a complete-game three-hitter to earn her first collegiate victory and delivered a first-inning, bases-clearing double to assist the Cal Poly softball team to a 3-1 opening-game victory against California Friday at the Mustang Classic. The Mustangs completed their sweep later in the evening as senior righthander Robyn Kontra struck out a career-high 11 hitters to help Cal Poly past Santa Clara at Bob Janssen Field, 4-0.

Against California, the Golden Bears (8-6) scored their lone run against Cahn (1-3) in the top of the first as leadoff hitter Valerie Arioto singled up the middle before advancing to third base behind consecutive throwing errors by Mustang catcher Stephanie Correia and right fielder Brandi Gutierrez. California, however, collected just two hits the remainder of the game as Cahn faced four batters over the minimum the rest of the evening.

The Mustangs responded in the bottom half of the first as junior shortstop Melissa Pura drew a two-out walk before advancing to second via Correia’s single to right field. Cahn then followed with her initial collegiate extra-base hit – the bases-clearing double down the right-field line.

Cal Poly added an additional run during the sixth as first baseman Krysten Cary drove home Correia with a two-out sacrifice fly.

Cahn and Correia each finished with two hits against California.

In the nightcap versus Santa Clara (0-13), Correia doubled home second baseman Stephanie Tam in the third and Pura plated Tam again with a fifth-inning triple to aid Cal Poly to its first winning streak of the season. During the sixth, errors by Bronco second baseman Meghan Chavez and third baseman Ashley Blier allowed center fielder Jenna Maiden and Gutierrez to score during consecutive at-bats.

Kontra (2-1) scattered six hits to earn her first shutout victory since defeating Pacific, 3-0, May 11, 2007.

During prior action at the Mustang Classic Friday, Sacramento State hit its way past UAB, 15-8, before California dealt the Blazers a second loss, 10-2, in six innings. Santa Clara also lost its opening game, to Sacramento State, 8-5.
