LOS ANGELES – A pair of seventh-inning throwing errors undid a potential comeback victory for the Cal Poly softball team Saturday afternoon during second-day action at the UCLA-hosted Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament, as the Mustangs fell at Easton Stadium to No. 25 San Diego State, 4-3.
Held to a pair of hits and trailing 2-0 after five innings, Cal Poly (1-1) received a single from senior third baseman Cristen Lee to lead off the sixth inning. Senior second baseman Stephanie Tam – Cal Poly’s career sacrifice hits leader – then pushed her Mustang total to 40 and Lee to second base before junior first baseman Krysten Cary walked. Senior shortstop Melissa Pura followed with a single that not only plated Lee, but helped her match Lisa Modglin’s program record of 105 career RBI. Designated player Anna Cahn then delivered a two-run single to left field for a 3-2 Mustang advantage.
Despite allowing an unearned run during the second, Mustang junior lefthander Helen Peña held San Diego State hitless through four innings. Peña retired the Aztec side in order during the sixth and struck out shortstop Jen Wisneski to begin the seventh before Mustang catcher Stephanie Correia threw out pinch hitter Felicia Reifschneider at second base. With two outs, Peña walked center fielder Brittany Knudsen before pinch hitter Taryin Casillas singled. The next hitter, left fielder Tonye McCorkle, batted a ball to Peña who floated a throw over Cary at first base. Knudsen scored and, during the same play, Mustang right fielder Nora Sobczak committed a second throwing error that advanced pinch runner Traci Wolf to third. Catcher Erin Floros followed with an infield single to score Wolf for the victory.
Peña, who struck out five Aztecs, suffered just one earned run as the Mustangs committed five errors during game. Pura finished with two hits.
Cal Poly has the chance to avenge the loss Sunday, Feb. 8 as the Mustangs face the Aztecs at 11:30 a.m. That game precedes Cal Poly’s 2 p.m. encounter against No. 4 UCLA.
