CATHEDRAL CITY – Junior lefthander Helen Peña limited Georgia Tech to four hits and sophomore designated player Anna Cahn’s first home run of the season proved to be the difference as the Cal Poly softball team completed Saturday action at the Oregon State-hosted Cathedral City Classic with a 2-0 defeat of the Yellow Jackets at the Big League Dreams Sports Park.

Senior second baseman Stephanie Tam added a run-scoring base hit in the fourth inning for Cal Poly (3-4), which posted a victory during the first meeting between the two programs. The victory against Georgia Tech (7-5) was also Cal Poly’s first of the tournament, following a 3-2 defeat to No. 8 Oklahoma Friday evening and an 8-6 loss to No. 9 Tennessee in eight innings earlier Saturday.

The Mustangs complete play at the Cathedral City Classic Sunday, Feb. 22 against Kansas (5-7) at 11 a.m. and versus UNLV (6-6) at 1 p.m. Fans can follow the action via Gametracker at GoPoly.com.

After surrendering a leadoff single to Yellow Jackets right fielder Blair Shimandle, Peña retired nine of the ensuing 10 batters she faced. Georgia Tech’s lone threat to break through against Peña came during the fourth inning, as a fielder’s choice from shortstop Kelsi Weseman advanced Tiffany Johnson to third base with two outs. Peña, however, struck out catcher Kate Kuzma to end the inning.

Cahn and the Mustangs quickly responded to Georgia Tech’s squandered scoring opportunity as the sophomore led off the bottom half of the fourth by launching her fourth-career homer over the right field fence. Two batters later, senior center fielder Jessica Rogers singled up the middle and stole second base ahead of senior third baseman Cristen Lee’s four-pitch walk. Tam then singled up the middle to plate Rogers for the final margin of victory.

Staked to the lead, Peña retired nine of the final 10 hitters she faced and finished the game with six strikeouts.

Lee and Tam each compiled two hits apiece.
