Cal Poly Beach Volleyball to Play First Home Matches Saturday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.— After playing its first 12 matches on the road to begin the season, the Cal Poly beach volleyball team returns to play its first home matches of the season this weekend.

The No. 6 Mustangs host both TCU and No. 10 Arizona Saturday from its home courts in Pismo Beach. They will play the Horned Frogs at 9 a.m. and the Wildcats at 1 p.m. TCU and Arizona will also play each other at 11 a.m.

Cal Poly goes into Saturday with a 10-2 record that includes wins over top 20 teams in the current No. 1 team in the nation Pepperdine, Grand Canyon, TCU and Tulane.

Most recently, the Mustangs swept all of its opponents at a tournament co-hosted by USF and CSUN. They beat Pacific, San Francisco and Portland all by scores of 5-0.

Cal Poly boasts two pairings that have yet to lose this season. The No. 2 duo of sophomore Emily Sonny and junior Samantha Manley are 12-0 and have already twice been named Big West Pair of the Week and have also been named AVCA Pair of the Week. They have only dropped two sets so far this year. The No. 5 tandem of freshmen Macy Gordon and sophomore Heather Pembroke also have yet to lose this year, sporting an 11-0 record.

The No. 6 ranking for the Mustangs is the highest in program history. They began the season ranked 14th in nation before climbing to No. 8 and now holding steady at No. 6 for two weeks in a row.

The No. 10 Wildcats come into Saturday's matches with a 6-2 record. Their two losses came against No. 16 Loyola Marymount and No. 8 Long Beach State.

TCU comes in with a record of 3-8. Cal Poly beat the Horned Frogs 4-1 earlier this season in Fort Worth, Texas on March 3.
