Cal State Northridge Edges Cal Poly in 11 Innings, 6-5

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Ryan Raslowski's bouncing single over the head of third baseman Jimmy Allen knocked in the winning run from third base with two outs in the 11th inning, lifting Cal State Northridge to a 6-5 victory over Cal Poly in the opening game of a Big West Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Matador Field.

Cal Poly, down to its final strike twice in the top of the ninth inning, rallied for three runs to overcome a 4-2 deficit and took a 5-4 lead into the bottom of the ninth. Cal State Northridge tied the game at 5-5 on a fielder's choice and sent the contest into extra innings.

With the win, Cal State Northridge improved to 15-18 for the season and 3-4 in Big West games. Cal Poly, with a chance to move into a first-place tie with Cal State Fullerton, instead fell to 20-12 and 4-3.

The loss overshadowed a 5-for-5 day at the plate by Mustang junior center fielder Mitch Haniger, who had three singles, a double and gave Cal Poly the 5-4 lead in the ninth with a two-run home run to left field on an 0-2 pitch.

It was Haniger's seventh home run of the season, he now has 35 RBI and he produced his second five-hit game as a Mustang. The other was in the 2010 season finale against Cal State Bakersfield.

Cal State Northridge scored three runs in the seventh inning to erase a 2-1 deficit and take a 4-2 lead. Kyle Attl doubled in one run and Ryan Raslowski and Adam Barry both singled to knock in the tying and go-ahead runs.

Mustang starter Joey Wagman allowed four runs and eight hits in 6 2/3 innings with one walk and six strikeouts. He was not involved in the decision. Chase Johnson (1-3) took the loss, allowing two runs and three hits in 2 2/3 innings.

Lewis Cohen (4-1) earned the win though he allowed three runs and six hits in four innings.

Second game of the twinbill is set to start at about 4:15 p.m., with the series finale slated for Sunday at 1 o'clock. Senior southpaw Kyle Anderson will start for Cal Poly in the nightcap of the doubleheader.
