SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Sophomore right-hander Casey Bloomquist struck out a career-high 10 in seven innings and sophomore second baseman Mark Mathias doubled to drive in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning as No. 8 Cal Poly defeated Wagner 3-1 in a non-conference baseball game Saturday night before 1,093 in Baggett Stadium.
The victory clinches the three-game series for Coach Larry Lee's Mustangs -- Cal Poly won Friday's game 8-1 -- and improves Cal Poly's record to 16-3 with its sixth straight win. The Mustangs have won 16 consecutive home games dating back to the 2013 season, the second-longest active streak in NCAA Division I. Western Carolina has won 21 straight home games.
Wagner fell to 2-10 with the loss.
Bloomquist improved his record to 4-0 and surpassed his previous career high for strikeouts by two. He struck out eight against Santa Clara a year ago. Bloomquist walked two and allowed one run and eight hits, dropping his ERA to 0.99.
Junior southpaw Taylor Chris tossed the final two innings in scoreless fashion for his second save, striking out three. He did not allow a hit and walked one.
The loss went to Wagner starter Matt Morris (1-3), who surrendered two runs and six hits in six innings with one walk and seven strikeouts.
The two teams battled through three scoreless innings before Cal Poly tallied a run in the fourth. Junior right fielder Nick Torres led off with a single to left-center field and, two batters later, senior third baseman Jimmy Allen blooped a double down the right-field line to score Torres.
Wagner tied the game in the fifth. The Seahawks loaded the bases with nobody out and third baseman Nick Dini's sacrifice fly to center field pushed across the run. Bloomquist escaped further damage with a shallow fly ball to right field and a grounder to shortstop.
Cal Poly regained the lead, 2-1, in the sixth. Sophomore designated hitter Brian Mundell doubled to left-center field to lead off the inning and, two infield grounders later, Mathias doubled down the left-field line to score Mundell.
The Mustangs added an insurance run in the eighth. Mundell doubled down the left-field line and junior left fielder Zack Zehner's single to right-center field tallied Mundell.
Cal Poly's nine hits included two doubles by Mundell and a pair of singles by Zehner. Allen, Mathias and junior center fielder Jordan Ellis all contributed doubles.
Shortstop Nick Mascelli singled twice for Wagner.
Final game of the series will be played Sunday at 1 p.m. with Cal Poly freshman right-hander Justin Calomeni (4-0, 1.61 ERA) to face Wagner sophomore southpaw Paul Mammino (0-2, 4.97 ERA).
