Cal Poly to Announce 2017 Recruiting Class Wednesday in Football Office

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly football coaching staff will announce its 2017 recruiting class on Wednesday inside the Cal Poly Football Office.

Ninth-year Mustang head coach Tim Walsh will open the press conference with general remarks at 2 p.m., followed by a video presentation of the 20 or so signees' high school or community college highlights from the 2016 season, narrated by the assistant coaches who recruited the players.

Walsh will close the press conference by answering questions from the media. Fans may follow the coaches to Milestone Tavern at 3 p.m. to celebrate the signings.

Cal Poly is expected to receive about 21 National Letters of Intent from recruits Wednesday beginning at 7 a.m. The Regular Signing Period ends April 1.

The Mustangs must replace 18 seniors from last fall's 7-5 squad that finished tied for fourth place in the 13-team Big Sky Conference and earned its fourth NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision playoff berth in the last 12 years.

Offensively, Cal Poly finished No. 2 in the nation in team rushing en route to a tie for No. 21 in the final FCS Coaches Poll and No. 24 in the STATS FCS Media Poll. The Mustangs produced their 12th winning season in the last 16 years.

Junior fullback Joe Protheroe and senior offensive lineman Matt Fisher both earned a pair of All-American honors and Protheroe, Fisher, junior center Joey Kuperman and senior linebacker Chris Santini all earned first-team All-Big Sky accolades last fall.

The 2017 schedule is expected to be released in the next few weeks.
