Men's Soccer Program Unveils 2011 Promotions Schedule

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – With the Cal Poly men's soccer team's 2011 home opener just five days away, the Mustang Athletics Department announced the program's season match promotions schedule on Monday afternoon. The slate of events at Alex G. Spanos Stadium runs the length of the regular season and includes all 13 home matches.

Cal Poly, which finished fourth among Division I programs last season after averaging 3,013 fans per home match, opens its promotions schedule on Saturday, Aug. 13 with a 7 p.m. exhibition against California. The match serves as Cal Poly's Youth Kickoff Celebration night, with all youth ages 13 and under admitted free. The match will also feature t-shirt giveaways at half time and a postgame autograph signing session with Mustang players (all season giveaways are limited to one item per family).

Cal Poly's final exhibition, a 5 p.m. kickoff versus UC Santa Cruz on Sunday, Aug. 21, serves as Catalyst Soccer Night. All players in Catalyst program t-shirts will receive free admission.

The first 1,000 supporters for Cal Poly's regular season opening match versus UNLV on Saturday, Aug. 27 will receive Mustang schedule posters while the first 200 for the program's showdown versus New Mexico on Friday, Sept. 2 will receive handmade Mustang soccer flags. Both matches kick off at 7 p.m.

Cal Poly's Sept. 4 matchup versus Seattle (1 p.m.) serves as the culmination of the program's Pass it On Summer Youth Coaching Series. All coaches who attended one of the program's eight summer clinics will receive a ticket voucher for the game versus Seattle and be able to take part in Cal Poly's pre-match warmup routine. The first 500 overall fans into Spanos Stadium will also receive Mustang soccer stickers.

The program's five-match homestand closes on Friday, Sept. 9 against Villanova and Sept. 11 versus West Virginia. The first 250 fans for Cal Poly's 7 p.m. match versus the Wildcats will receive a Mustang soccer scarf while the initial 500 for the 1 p.m. Sunday match versus the Mountaineers will receive Mustang seat cushions.

Classes will be in session when the Mustangs return home to host Denver on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 1 p.m. and the first 500 Cal Poly students with ID will receive limited-print 2011 Mustang soccer t-shirts. Cal Poly's Big West Conference home opener versus UC Davis follows at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 5 with the first 500 fans receiving Vuvuzela horns. The initial group of 500 supporters for Cal Poly's 7 p.m. matchup versus Cal State Northridge on Tuesday, Oct. 11 will receive rally towels.

The Mustangs welcome central coast rival UC Santa Barbara to Spanos Stadium for a 7 p.m. showdown on Friday, Oct. 14 (gates will open at 5 p.m.). Billed as "Break the Record Night," the program aims to challenge the 11,075-fan figure set when the two programs faced each other at Spanos Stadium on Oct. 17, 2008. That sellout mark still ranks as the seventh-highest regular season attendance figure in NCAA  history.

Cal Poly completes the home portion of its regular season schedule and celebrates senior night on Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. versus UC Irvine. The first 100 fans into Spanos Stadium will receive limited edition t-shirts recognizing Cal Poly's seven outgoing senior players.

Cal Poly returns seven regular starters from a 2010 side that finished 8-7-3 overall and posted a fourth-successive top-three showing in the Big West Conference standings with a 5-3-2 mark. Last season's Mustangs, who contested the 15th-toughest schedule in Division I soccer and finished 3-3-1 against programs that qualified for the NCAA Tournament, reached the semifinal round of the Big West Tournament for the third-successive season.
